Sealing the roof on my '30 Town Sedan
About 6 weeks ago I was out in a bad rain and wind storm. It was at night and when I got home, I discovered that the rain had leaked in and there were areas of the headliner that were quite wet. The next day I let the car sit out in the sun with the windows closed. The windows got foggy but the headliner was dry so I opened the windows and set a fan in the car to try to remove any remaining moisture. I did this for two more days until I was sure that there was no more moisture. I then searched the files here to see what people had used to reseal the dryed out roof material. I did not find anything other than suggestions to use silicon sealer. I saw a thread from Tom Wesenberg saying NOT to use silicon, so i didn't. I went to Fleet Farm and found a spray can of "BlueMagic" Pure Rubber Coating and used that. It comes in a 15 oz. can and the instructions said to use two coats, so I bought two cans to be sure I had enough. It was enough but there was none to spare. It seems to have covered quite well. I used the water hose to test for leaks and have not had any appear although that did not duplicate the force of the wind and rain we had that night. I am just relaying this information in case someone else is looking for a good sealant. Don/WI

Re: Sealing the roof on my '30 Town Sedan
I used 3M 5200 sealant (black color) to seal all around the edges of the Tudor top. Looks exactly like the cobra material when dry, and never leaks. Be warned, it takes several days to dry tack-free and like 10 days to cure, but it's worth it.
I first discovered this product when restoring an old Chris Craft wood boat almost 20 years ago. It's amazing stuff and lasts for ever. Mask off the areas like the visor and body in the back. Apply the sealant all around the edges and seams, then peel off the tape. Be sure to clean up any you get on paint or other areas before it sets up (you have a day or two). You can drive the car again in about 3 days. |

Your not kidding about the 3M 5200. You just have to be patient with it.

Is the idea to use 3M 5200 (Black) on the top's edges first; then, after it cures/sets up use the Blue Magic on bulk of the remaining top ? Our '31 sedan has a nice headliner and acceptable interior, it would super to be able to protect the interior until the top can be replaced. |
