40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
Hey guys. Never removed a perch bolt from a front axle. Is the axle threaded all the way through or is the threads on the perch bolt just for the nut? Essentially how easy are they to remove? Thanks for your time. Happy New Years.

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
there are tapered fit, and can be a bitch to remove, a lot of penetrating oil, heat and pounding to remove them, if you plan to reused them leave the nut screwed on as far as you can, and be careful with the hammer

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
Ford3 is right about this job. The taper fit makes them a real bear to remove. If you have access to a press, that'll make your life easier. I wouldn't worry too much about saving the old ones...

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
The nuts have a taper but the pins are straight. They rust in place and are hard to move. New ones are not available so don't mess up the old ones unless you already have some replacements. They are not hardened steel so bend and smash easily.

Here's a 1000 words worth................
Yours look different at the top, but the part that goes through the axle and yoke are essentially the same.

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
maybe you could put the axel in a big vice and try to turn it, and use heat

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
Being in the drop axle business iv removed hundreds of them
0. 9 out of 10 will take at least 10 tons (w heat) to start moving. 1. Penetrates are useless until it starts to move 2. Heating the axle perch boss area is mandatory 3. Press works best 4. If using a hammer .. Axle must be supported solidly 5. You will mushroom the treads .. Its unavoidable 6. Pins / bolts are strait = no taper 7. Thread size is 5/8 x 18 Fixing the threads is as simple as getting a split die or breaking one in half - install it on the good threads up higher on the pin - re cut (shallowly) the bad part - back up and tighten die and repeat until the nut fits nicely. Re drill the smashed cotter pin hole .... debur on the wire wheel |

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
Just to support the point that the pins are not tapered I did a quick measure on a Model A pin, and one from a '47..................in a total of six locations .62x was the result.

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
I had a bad experience with a spring shop. Took in my '40 Ford axle with instructions to remove the perches. They called me and said to pick up my axle. It was wrapped up in paper to my surprise. The bill was $150 and they said it was a tough job. I paid and went home to open the package. The perches were gone but, the axle was totally destroyed. I went back and they said there is no guarantee when working on these axles. Next time open the package first......

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
the top inch of the perch is tapered, and thats all it takes to wedge it in the axle and make it very difficult to remove

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
I used the method described by NealinCA. Axle upside down, lots of heat and just wail on it with an air chisel. A combination of that and trying to rotate it did the trick.

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
Did I hear someone say 40 perch bolts. You wanna see perch bolts, I'll show you perch bolts. How many perch bolts you wanna see? (as long as they are left side). All are NOS except 3 on the right side of the photo which were removed without damage. "For me es easy, for you es difficult." (Sr. Wencess)

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
So if I remove the perch bolts, they are useless unless I am an expert in repairing them. I am trying to install the "pin" for the stabilizer but everyone says that needs to be pressed in as well. So in other words, I am screwed either way!!! Either I replace the perch bolts or I run without the stabilizer??? Thanks

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
Anyone know where I can get perch bolts for a '40 Ford Pickup that also has the sway bar? After three years of rebuliding my maiden voyage got spoiled by a tight turn on a hill hiding a wopper of a pothole. I thought I only broke my shoulder, but I snapped a perch bolt, too.
Any ideas? Quote:

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
As barnfind08 said, NOS ones are available. (I have several pair) buy a pair from barnfind08 and don't worry about destroying or fixing the old ones.
Heed the advice about having it done in a press. Some are a real bugger and I have had several take up to 17 tons before they moved. I put on a hardened nut before pushing on the end because if you mushroom it, your next stop is a big drill press or vertical mill. |

Re: 40 Front Axle Perch Bolt
Don't forget to use anti-seize compound when you reinstall the perch bolts. I double nut mine to protect the threads.
