Default 30/31 v 32-34 steering box mounts

Just wondering if anyone can tell me if a 30-31 adjustable steering box chassis mount will interchange with the chassis mounting section of a 32-34 steering box?

Thanks in advance

Mark,

I have never heard of "a 30-31 adjustable steering box chassis mount". Do you have a picture or a site that sells them? What are you trying to accomplish?

Are you talking about the mounting flange? Model A has two bolts and '32-'34 have three.

The '32 has the two bolts "down" and the '33-'34 has the two bolts "up".

I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say "adjustable steering box chassis mount".

Do you have a picture?

I assume you are referring to the "sector housing". If so, yes you can install a 30-31 Model A sector housing on a 32-34 steering box. I just did one with 15:1 internals for a Model A.

Sorry if my question was a confusing.

I meant the sector housing, as Neal describes it.

i have a 32 and a 34 steering box, and am looking as a Model A project that comes with a late A steering box (adjustable internals) that I would like to swap the sector housings to enable the 34 steering box to fit the model A frame ans provide an updated steering box.

Thanks all for your responses,

From what I understand you are trying to do is use a 33/34 steering box and a 30/31 Model A sector housing in a Model A chassis. If so you would have to use a 33/34 pitman arm as it's splined where as the A has the square shank. There would be a little advantage with the 15:1 ratio also the steering shaft is of different length but why don't you install needle bearings into the 30/31 sector?

thanks for those tips Dave. I have a pitman arm to suit.

stupid question - what is to be gained when fitting Needle Bearings?

needle bearings on the sector shaft in the housing you are changing instead if a bushing. ford did it for one year i believe, 36, then went away from it. some guys like it some dont. the thoughts are the bearing does not travel enough, and therefore wears needle marks on the sector shaft. your improvement from 11 to 1, to 15 to one will be like power steering. i like the idea, never heard of it before, and can see one in my future. 34 steering shaft is smaller, i made a shim from a paint thinner can to put a model a steering wheel on a v8 shaft. most likely will need a custom light switch rod. you could also mill the sector shaft square if you wish to use the A pitman arm, i would just use the v8 arm myself

the v8 pitman is probably shorter, which helps ease the steering. i have both to measure, do you?

We know the 2 tooth box has a different length steering shaft than the 3 tooth box. Has anybody installed a 3 tooth worm on a 2 tooth shaft? That would save a lot of messing about with steering wheels and steering columns with different lengths.

model A shaft is bigger than the v8, so to use the v8 worm gear you would use the v8 shaft also. or cut and splice the two, which can be done, but not necessary here.
