How did the transmissions compare?
Another thing that comes into play is rear end ratio. When I was in college, a friend of mine bought a new '66 Corvette with the 350 HP 327, a close ratio transmission and 3.08 rear end gears! (he wanted to get good mileage with his new car). Everybody in town that had "Daddy's car" (if it had a 4 bbl V8 and an automatic) would beat him in a drag race. Back in those days, we raced to about 70, then backed off. He never had a chance. A year later, I got my own new L79 Corvette, only mine had 3.70 gears (see? I do learn). There was absolutely no comparison between those two cars; his was "pig" and mine was a "killer". Back then, we had no idea what a difference the rear axle ratio could make.

Well to Michael e who started this thread I'd like to say I encourage you to pursue your project and prove the naysayers wrong.

There is a large following of Y-block enthusiasts both here in the U.S. and in places like South America and Australia. As such there are new parts being developed and more and more people are rediscovering the Y block.

One example is this new "shorty" timing cover that would be a big help for someone like you who is swapping into a '39 Ford engine bay.

I think your car will be bitchin' with Ford power.

Why not post in the Late V8 section of the Barn, isn't it for Y-block discussion? Should be folks there that know the Y-block and provide support.

Yes but this is an early V8 chassis and a great counterbalance to the Olds thread.

I built a 57 292 with all the good factory stuff. Dizzy in 57 was the best dizzy and ECZ-G heads. Put a holley 390 on it. It was great. Aluminum heads would have helped.

Went through a few of my boxes of littles and big mags. I have more of the early little mags. Didn't find the 56' mag yet but found a few other neat ones.

Uploaded here just for fun.

Here is the yr end stocker rundown of motors in 56. Lots of data.

It's great to go through these again, I'm enjoying it. The rod and custom & car craft stuff is fun also.

Great point and I agree. floored does have a point about that its stuffing a yblock in a early ford. Technically this thread is out of line

It's a slipper slope when it comes to the internet.

I personally am interested in the restoration aspect. Which I hope remains the main focus of this forum.

The building a Flat Head the Right Way is an interesting article. Especially the remarks about exhaust manifolds.
