Ford assembly line photos
Does anyone out there know if there are pictures or videos documenting the assembly of a Ford car from start to finish? I have many single shots of different years on the assembly line, but none that documents the full build. Just wondering!!

Re: Ford assembly line photos
Felix, there was a very professionally done animated movie put out by Ford in the '30s. I can't at the moment remember the name of the movie, but then, I also forgot half the stuff I used to remember, but the rest just slipped my mind.

Re: Ford assembly line photos
Yup, that is a '38 Standard. Ken, have another cup of coffee and look again. I have the 1953 50th anniversary book that Ford published as part of the 50th celebration and it has a drawing of the assembly line depicting the building of a car from start to finish, there are also a lot of photos of the assembly of various components.

Re: Ford assembly line photos
there is a film "Ford for 40" that sort of depicts the assembly of a 1940 Ford. It is available on DVD I think.

Re: Ford assembly line photos
That's the one that slipped my mind. It combines real stuff with animation. An animated Ford "Elf" takes you on a tour of building a car start to finish. Not a documentary, more of an educational entertainment.

Re: Ford assembly line photos
If anyone knows of a good web site for early assembly line photos please let us know. This stuff is so fasinating to look at! The combination of technological innovation and workers frozen in time is just great to look at.

Re: Ford assembly line photos
something interesting I noticed in this photo, is the first car is a deluxe(chrome grill and banjo wheel) and the second is a standard. I had always assumed that they would run a line of nothing but one type for so long, then go to another and so on. but it looks as though there are even different colored cars on the line in that picture??

Re: Ford assembly line photos
Felix,
Sub-assemblies were batch produced, but when it came to the final assembly line, you're looking at specific build sheets for each car on the line. In addition, there were VIP build sheets for cars to receive special care in assembly, for delivery to customers with some special status. These cars were closely followed, all workers on notice.

Anyway, I misplaced half the stuff I thought I forgot but the rest is there somewhere... I'm workin' on it ...I'm workin' on it...
