Default Readings on a vacuum gauge

I would like to know the vacuum gauge readings on any standard V8 model vehicles when you are cruising along in top gear at say 40 to 50mph. I am trying to work out the vacuum on the distributor vacuum brake for the crab and helmet type of distributors.

Adjusting the vacuum brake is quite simple. No vacuum readings necessary. From the Ford repair manual:

The problem here now, is with the fuel we use we have found out that most of our original V8's do not ping.

If its any help my readings are 20" at idle [I can get 21] at 50 MPh I would easy be cruising on 17"
motor is 37 21 stud. electroinc ign. large 50 main jets. Gearing must be around 4.1 . its a pickup.. Run it pretty hard.

I have my vacuum brake unscrewed as far as it will go with no ping. That may be because of my elevation of 5,000 feet but I think it may also be the modern fuel as has been mentioned.
