Default 40 ford belt

Are there 2 different length belts for a 40 Ford? I am not sure but did the have a 3 11/16" pulley or a 3 3/16 pulley on the generator which would change belt length. I have a 3 3/16 pulley on gen. and seems like the belt may be a little on the long side. It is #241 made by a company called US which in old NOS. Working on a 239 engine.

Sid, your memory is alive and well!
There were in fact two different fan belts respective of the two different pulleys that were utilized in 1940.
The first pulley was 3 11/16" diameter and required belt 78-8620-A, inside diameter 50.83".
The second design pulley was 3 3/16" diameter and was placed in to production approximately June, 1940. I have noticed that most cars being pit judged on the concourse have an incorrect pulley.
The later, 3 3/16" pulley required a shorter belt than it's predecessor. That belt was 78-8620-C, inside diameter 50.06".
