Default How do I mount a 21 stud with a 36 Trans into a model A coupe

My 21 stud with a 1936 Trans is ready to be dropped into a 31 coupe but I need advice on transmission mounts, I bought weld-in front engine mounts from Brookville and the biscuits but not sure what to expect for the rear mount and was also told the ears on the Trans will not reach the center crossmember so I will have to make a support. I also bought adapters to run stock A pedals and parking brake.

What I do know/been told:
-I will have to trim the center crossmember for the driveshaft to clear
-possibly remove the fuel pump stand to clear the firewall

Pictures are best if you guys have them, thank you

There are the early 21 stud engines that have mounts bolted to the front or to the coolant carry through then there are 21-studs that have water bumps in the block like the 37 & early 38 types. I assume you have that type.

Model As are weakened when the old 4-banger is removed from the picture. They need at least a sturdy cross member. The traditional ones are the 1932 K-member or the F-1 cross member. If you split the wish bones then you don't have to worry about the mount for that. If you use a 1932 wish bone then you can attach it to the K-member. There are a lot of ways to do it but the 1932 cross member & wishbone was the traditional method back in the day. The Bishop Tardel book "How to Build a Traditional Ford Hotrod" or AV8 is a good book to look at but it has some flaws. The F1 is set up for the later mounts.

If you want to build from scratch then boxing the frame might be a good idea. You would only need a simple cross member if the frame is more rigid and the bones are split. Any of the early V8 3-speeds can be adapted to any of the rear engine mounts used between 1932 & 1948. The cross member can be set up for the 1936 type if you want.

The HAMB is a good place to check for all sorts of AV8 options.

Buy the book by Mike Bishop and Vern Tardel.

How to Build a Traditional Ford Hot Rod.

Google it, it's freely available.

Mart.

Here is a picture how I set mine up. I used a K member for rear mount. The Tardel book will explain as Mart said.

I haven't done it but I would look at the '32 K member that is narrowed to fit the Model A. and then run a '32 rear trans mount. Locate the engine so you can run the stock rear end without modifying it. Don't weld in your front motor mounts until you are sure they are in the exact right location, measure twice, cut (or in this case weld) once. How about a picture of the adapters to run the stock pedals and parking brake? Have you designed your master cylinder mount yet? How about adding your general location and email to your profile, you can never tell when that information will pay off.

This would be a good question to post on HAMB since they deal with modified vehicles, https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...ssage-board.5/

Building a form of "K" member for the trans mount can be done with several pieces of angle iron and some flat plate. I can also mount thee from axle wish bone Ball. Tis king of fabrication is common when building a hot rod and there were no books or suppliers back then. It requires some thought.
