Blown HG results
Ok. got the head off and here are the results as far as I can tell. Obviously it happened in #3 and in Pic #2 near the center water jacket you can see a rust trail leading to under the head gasket. Flipped the gasket over and there is a tear in the silicon around the water jacket hole. So I am down to cleaning and then rebuild time. The only thing I can come up with is that that nut was either loose or loosened up over time.

Re: Blown HG results
Looks like one of those "Not so fool proof gaskets." I think I still have one of those on one of my cars. Scary thought.

Are copper head gaskets for the Models "A" & "B" still being made? I don't think so.

Re: Blown HG results
On a fresh head install I check torque often until it settles in and stays put. After that at a minimum of once a year.

Re: Blown HG results
Thanks. Have seen here that is usually recommended for all gaskets. Thought maybe the recommendation for the silicone gasket was different/maybe more frequent.

Re: Blown HG results
Yes they are. Check the parts vendors, also Rock Auto.

Re: Blown HG results
I use Best brand head gaskets part #509G. GraphTite carbon fiber and steel fire rings. Three hot cold re torque cycles with a spray of copper coat. It has worked great for me on iron and aluminum heads. No more head gasket problems. bestgasket.com All they manufacture are gasket set for vintage autos. The GraphTite material was developed for their Chrysler Hemi line of head gaskets. It worked so well they started making it for Charlie Yapps Riley overhead conversions.

Re: Blown HG results
Well I am going with a Best Gasket 509C and am into clean up mode now. I have a list of things I still need to do before things go back together.

Re: Blown HG results
Mike, I don't see it mentioned but if you have a 'high compression' head a Best 573 gasket is recommended either copper or Graphtite®.

Re: Blown HG results
Yeah I have the 5.5 head. That is why I am going with the 509 copper gasket.

Re: Blown HG results
Mike, I think you misunderstood what I said. If you have the 5.5 head you should use the Model "B" gasket, #573C not the 509. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/h...mpression-head

Re: Blown HG results
Ok. Finally I think I got it-sorry I am a bit slow with different opinions being thrown around. But the 509 from Best is for the STOCK head. The 573 is for the 5.5/6.0 heads. I found those both in Copper from Best, so will get the 573 Copper.
