They look original. Any idea why they are there and why are you trying to fill them?

What you show is a gear A-6551 and case A-6541 assembly. Your V points to a slot that is in all A-6541 cases and does not need to be filled.

I’m going to fill in the two slots to prevent excessive oil pressure loss in a full pressure block that I’m building
I realise what you are saying, thanks !

I’m just trying to find best method for doing procedure.

Hey Charlie,
The B type block I’m working, is plumbed for oil to ALL areas, including to this gear where these two slots are located. If slots are not filled, too much oil pressure will be wasted/bleed off thereby lessening pressure to more vital areas, like shell bearings , cam rods and mains. Plugging will still provide oil, but at a much reduced rate.

Best way I've found is to disassemble it, put the housing on a mandrel, turn down the body, press a sleeve over it and turn it back to size. I just modified a few of these for the same exact purpose- its to force the oil out thru the pipe plug hole on a full pressure engine so the oil flow can be routed thru a filter etc.

Hey Dan,
Thanks for sharing you knowledge and experience !
I will call you next week !
I just installed that bronze gear set in my D block, that I got from you at Bakersfield.
Your products and work are the BEST !

That's what I'd do with maybe an "O" ring to seal it.

I run full-pressure B's and have never filled those slots. The ones that need to be filled are the 2 similar slots on the upper part of the pump. I fill those with JB weld. I have brazed them but that ruins the bushing and it must be replaced. I lightly drill a small depression in the pump to prevent movement of the JB weld.

Hey Jim B,
I’m with you in your statements on this subject
However, I’ve spoken to a well known (here ) engine builder of A/B engines. He was giving me instruction on the D block (similar to B).
He told of this gear mod.
Above, Dan is doing/selling this mod. So I’m looking into any ideas for possible improvement to an engine build.

You still have to get oil to the center cam and distributor/pump drive area so you don't want to seal both off. The oil pump mod is how a friend does it too.

The drive gear sits below the sleeved portion of the housing so it gets plenty of oil. On a B block the cam bearings are oiled from the oil galley, which in this case is under full pressure, so no worries on them getting oil. The one I just did was for a D block, so I did a few extras.

Hey Dan,
Ha, just missed your call. Will call you tomorrow as you suggest. Yeah, save the completed drive gear for me. Talk with you then, thanks !

I understand what you and Jim B have said. I only work full pressure B block.

This D block , overall, has improved oiling system throughout ! As Dan has said, it has direct full pressure from oil galley via 1/4" +/- hole. Lots of oiling then through same sized hole, behind drive, thru to center main. Needs mod that Dan made, to regulate tooo much oil passing drive. At least that's what others, who know, are using and Dan is making for the D.

As far as pump usage goes, I use the modern high pressure pump, like Stipe made. I've got one in for 15 yrs now and works wonderfully. Same type pump will be used in this block.

B blocks oil #1 & 4 from the galley but the center cam bearing gets its oil from the pump. I have drilled a small hole in the plug I install where the oil originally enters the galley. Have also put a small groove where I fill those slots in the pump. It doesn't matter as long as it gets some oil. A & B cams wear mostly on the center bearing because of the lobes are 180* apart on each side of that bearing, so oil is important there.

You do know who Jim B is right. Your cam was probably made by him. I think he knows a thing or two about engines.

Hey Jim B, FYI,
I read some written material , on the D, that I received from Mrs D.
It shows a stock pump and how it needs to be modified. BOTH upper slots ( that you speak of) and also the drive gear slots are to receive these mods....if using stock type pump in my D.
As I’ve already noted, I’ll be using a Stipe or a Williamson high pressure pump.
