20 years to young for Model A, but a nice '51 Club Coupe.

I think we'd all applaud the preservation of this Shoebox.

Too bad it's not a V-8, but can't have everything.

As much as I love the flathead 8's,I've driven and had some of the six's.There is a 47 here in town with the six,he said he had an overheating problem but it ran and pulled fine.I drove it around the back roads and lugged it down pretty good on some big hills.I thought it had nice torque for an old flathead. When I got to the shop I was shocked to see it had the six in it.

Thanks for sharing! That brings back lots of memories, as that is an outstanding example of my first real driver. Although it didn't look nearly as nice, that 6 was easy to work on as model A engine and really reliable! Being a kid and not having two extra cents to rub together...went out in below zero weather one night to the VFW (back in the hills of Pa) with a bud. Without antifreeze..you can guess what happened..at 2 am...at least what happened to that six! Last edited by hardtimes; 02-14-2013 at 02:51 PM. Reason: ........ |

While the 6 does not have the "nostalgic persona" of a flathead V8, it is still a worthy adversary. The 6 was rated at 95 hp and the 8 at 100. There was only 13 cu in difference in displacement. The 6 is not prone to overheat. In a 1950 Mechanix Illustrated road test on '50 Fords, Tom McCahill matched two '50 Fords, one a 6 and one a V8 in a 1/4 mile drag race. The 8 did not pass the 6 until they were into the last half of the 1/4 mile.

As a teenager my best friend had a '49 2dr sedan with a flathead six. I had a '50 coupe with a flathead V8. The 8 would rev higher but had less low end torgue. The six had a 4.4 inch stroke. It would lug much better than the V8, with its' 3.75 stroke. The V8 had a higher top speed. We never knew the third member ratios, but we thought the six was lower. Both cars served our teenage needs quite well, they had a back seat!

Amen to the truth of those statements and those of amodel25 regarding six torque vs V8 rpms. We had a quiet half mile stretch of blacktop back in the woods where the 'kids' gathered to watch cars run. With only a 1/4 mi to go and with the torque of that 6 and speed shifting skill...I saw the six (stock) win many a try against the V8 (stock). Did you know that you CAN wire up the broken rear universal joint with bailing wire...and limp home ten mile? Ford (shoebox) tough,eh!
