Default 'The Re-Blackening', Before and After

As promised, here are the before (the 1st photo) and the after photos of returning my late 1930 Model A pickup to the correct radiator shell, headlight buckets, and cowl band.

As with many of these non-deluxe late 1930-1931 trucks, at some point in the past someone installed stainless steel versions of the components. Stainless is correct for cars, but not for Model A or AA trucks. The correct truck shell, buckets, and band are made from carbon steel and they were painted at the factory.

When I finally found the carbon steel radiator shell that I needed, it had several coats of nasty paint on it so I had to strip it down and start from scratch. The headlight buckets were covered in black primer, and I had to remove that too. The cowl band had no paint on it when I started. Since my truck has an aged patina, the challenge was to match the parts to the rest of my truck.

The installation of these correct parts is a major step toward finishing the theme of my truck... 'Working In The War Years'.

Looks great. I think it is actually more challenging to create this original weathered look than restore to fine points judging!

It's more fun to search for the right parts. Once the finished project is complete then you get to drive drive drive!!!

And each patina is different...you never really add faux patina the same way twice.
