Re: problem with coil
I had one do that also. Never did figure out what happened. I replaced the coil and wires involved and it was still ok when I sold the car. Coils can be strange beasts!!

Re: problem with coil
What I am thinking (scary) is high secondary IGN resistance , either plug wires and/or plugs. Maybe need to perform a resistance test on the wires. What type of plug are you running? Points or PERTRONIX?
And then again it might just be a CHINESEIUM parts failure.

Re: problem with coil
I had that happen on my truck with a Duraspark II. Did it once so I don't know but it was with a set of 9mm Ford Racing plug wires and motorcraft copper plugs. I always wondered if it was just a defective coil wire.

Could have been a coil wire, cap or rotor and wires/plugs.

Re: problem with coil
Possible, but I changed just the wire out and it never did it again.
Wont be a problem for me when I put my new engine in, I got a new dist for the truck with a steel gear for a roller cam and I have a new NOS cap, cap adapter, and a motorcraft rotor to go on the new engine. I just thought it odd that it just did it with no sign. It didn't burn it two on mine it just when I pulled the coil wire off it actually fell apart and was no good then. Think I was pulling the wire off to pull the coil to have a easier time pulling the valve cover.

Re: problem with coil
I'm guessing the hi-voltage wire from the coil to the distributor was old or damaged and it's resistance was much too high, so the spark leaving the coil found an easier path to ground, across the top of the coil. Possibly to the "-" wire for the distributor?

You need a new coil, and all new spark plug wires, if the condition of the coil wire is any indication. . Last edited by dmsfrr; 01-13-2019 at 05:50 PM. |
