Cowl vents?

I asked this on the 'A' forum but I'm not really expecting an answer. Anyway, has anyone grafted a '32 cowl vent into a tankless '30-'31 cowl?

Yeah, for sure, of course, you could do it. What's the purpose? You can weld some 1/4" round spiderwebs in too. But I think the 32 cowl vent idea is better. Is most really a hamb/custom question. Probably more on how to weld sheet metal.

Didn't some '29 model A's have a cowl vent on the drivers side.A man here in town has one.

I have seen it done several times, go onto the H.A.M.B and I'm sure you can find them.

I read somewhere that the vents on the sides of a Model A cowl just sucked in the air that the engine was finished using. (As an aside, the guys who designed the '58 Corvette put louvers on the hood. The vent system drew in air from directly behind the hood. The louvers wound up being dummies when they went to production!)

look at my avatar. it is a 30 coupe. it has a cowl vent . the year of the vent is unknown to me, as I bought the car with it already installed. I bought the car from a fellow on the hamb. goes by the name of enfieldjoe. I have not seen any posts or for sale items from him in over a year. I have had the car for over 3 years now.

The small model T type might be an easier job. Not as flush though but functional.

The 1932 cowl vent has exactly the same contours as the 1930-31 gas tank top at the right position.


We make the assembly with a fiberglass dummy tank top.


To do it on a steel tank you will need to make the depression for the cowl vent gasket (or find a donor... or maybe Brookville or United Pacific will make one), a gutter assembly, the vent lid, hinge, ratchet, spring, handle, gasket. You also will need to make some kind of torque anchor to the firewall and the dash to avoid any flexing of the gas tank top.


Very do-able, a fair amount of work, and a fair amount of cost if you go with good quality parts.

Thanks Karl. My plan is to get a Brookville body next year. I've been wanting it to be a '29 but being able to get a cowl vent into a '31 body makes up my mind. Now, the question is will Brookville be able to do the fitting for me?

Brookville offers a cowl vent patch that is fully assembled that you weld in to your cowl panel. Part # B-117-cvp. It is listed in their 32 roadster sheet metal & components section. The two ends with the formed revels wont matter as you will trim it to fit. Hope this is what you are looking for. Bill

Damn hot rodders... I found an original surround and vent. I cut the bottom of my tank off with plasma, then carefully measured out the top where I wanted it. I panel flanged the cowl and welded it in from the top. If I did it again I would probably butt weld it in. Last pic is the finished product.

Pete, the Ford engineer that was responsible for the kick panel air vent was probably fired. Who puts an air intake about a foot back from louvers, designed to let hot air out? When I drove my '46 Woodie cross country I had to close my cowl vent when we went thru Needles, Ca. it was 116 degrees and my feet were getting hot!
