Re: Removing glass from rear view
Jim,
Your mirror insulator was scrap long-grain topping material judging from your photos. It is not uncommon to encounter it on original mirrors. Scrap upholstery material was also used. Pyroxilyn is an artificial leather that pre-dates vinyl. It is still used on some hard-bound book covers. |

Re: Removing glass from rear view
I did what Lawson Cox suggested awhile back - had a mirror shop cut and glue a new mirror over my '52 F1's rear view mirror which had lost most of its silvering. Looks great and since I had "restored" the metalwork already, it is like new!! Great - for $11.00 - can't be beat!!

Re: Removing glass from rear view
I finally got the mirror back from being resilvered. VERY happy with results. Cost me $40 plus shipping. Place called a Moment in Time in Kansas (they have a web site).
Dave, Stupid Anal type question....what is the difference between silver and grey if it is flat? To me silver is metalic. Are we talking like a flat rustoleum? After all this I want to be sure I coat it with the right stuff. THANKS! |

Re: Removing glass from rear view
Jim,
Your re-silvered mirror looks great. Yes, silver and aluminum paints are metallic, including the satin and flat varieties. I used Plasti-kote "Magicolor" flat aluminum fast-drying enamel, which worked fine (it's a dead ringer for the original color and finish). No doubt other 'bug bomb' paint manufacturers also offer a flat silver or aluminum. When you mask the mirror prior to spraying the paint, the edge of the glass gets painted too, but not the beveled portion of the edge. |

I figure it cost me $55 plus the original cost of the used mirror and mount. I am hoping people will be able to tell the difference between original glass and reproduction. Otherwise it was just busy work. Last edited by jim1932; 09-11-2011 at 12:00 PM. Reason: Can't type |
