'39 trans in a '35 coupe -- rear mount question

I'm dropping a '39 trans into my '35 coupe, along with a complete '40 rear end -- brakes, bones, torque tube, etc -- and had a question: Can I replace the '35 rear vulcanized mount with one that bolts up to the "ears" on the '35 chassis, and uses the doughnut-type isolators?

Dave, No. The spacing is wrong. You need the 35 mount. It has rubber isolation as part of the mount. (as you state).

Use the 35 rubber vulcanized original rear mount ... Here is my 39 trans installed in my 35 Coupe with the 35 rear mount (click in the picture to enlarge)

You can if you use the frame bracket out of a 37 to 40 frame

A little off point but what about the emergency brakes? I used a 39 e/brake handle & cable to attach to the later juice brakes for a 39 or 40 rear end. Not worried about keeping original because I have a 49 truck 8RT in my 35. Hope this helps.

I have a '40-48 column shift trans in my '36 coupe. Very simple installation using the '36 rear mount bolted to the trans and frame.
From my experience, the use of a '35-36 trans mount is a must have item if the trans is upgraded to a later model unit.

In late '36 Ford went to the '37 type rear transmission mount to minimize engine vibrations. When I changed the transmission in my '35 to a '39, I retained the '35 rear mount and added a '37-'40 cross member brace to reduce vibrations. The '35 rear mount provided the needed emergency brake mounting. Basically, everything bolted together (after removing the '35 frame mounts). Vibrations are a now a thing of the past! Incidentally, for what it is worth, I found the bigger 78 transmission case somewhat harder to squeeze in the '35 opening.

Tom.... so you removed the the '35 "ears" and installed the '37 - '40 cross piece. It looks like the '35 mount drops right on allowing you to bolt the trans in using the later rubber doughnuts and bolts? Did you drill and bolt the newer mount to the chassis? Weld it in? Rivet it?


Peter.... your car has been a real inspiration, plus I really appreciate how well the build up was photographed! How did you mount your parking brake? Off the '35 mount like Tom's above, or up under the dash like the later cars? Thanks.

It as been several years since I did this but, as I recall I some of the holes left over from the original ears lined up with the '37-40 mount holes. The remaining ones I drilled.

If you closely review the pix that peter c posted in #3 you will note that his car has a late model dual master-cylinder which required an adapter to mount to the '39 Ford type of peddle assy.
I would be a little suspect of the master cylinder being so close to the muffler, which apparently has a baffle attached to it.

Reference the question of the master cylinder- apparently the heat shield is doing its job as no problems have been experienced over several summers in the hottest temps and all operating conditions including sustained idling in heavy traffic.

Long mount is to position the dual master cylinder filler cap directly below the existing original (former) battery access hatch for inspection and servicing!
