Service Bulletin copyright expired?

I'm no copyright expert but shouldn't the copyright have expired on the TSB's. Seems like they should be available online. I'm not against buying a copy but those docs are 80+ years old and seems like they would be public domain by now.

I guess they were called just service bulletins back then but now are called techincal service bulletins or TSB's.

I believe copyrights can be renewed, not sure if this is the case with the TSB's. Just a thought.

If ford is enforcing the copyright of Model A part numbers you can be sure that are enforcing everything IMO.

Sure can't see that Ford is a friend to the old car hobby with their hostility to the use of original parts numbers. Changing my buying habits to another mark. Good luck: Fred A

You can understand why FORD would not want someone, who is making pure "crap" reproduction parts, puting their part numbers on the "crap".

Copyrights do not expire, nor do trademarks. Patents have an expiration and many assume the others do to, but the writer holds the rights to the piece for ever. Ford get's a little touchy on people reprinting anything with the trademark items.

Federal standards for copyright duration differ substantially under the 1909 act compared with the 1976 act because of the renewal term contained in the 1909 act. Under the 1909 act, federal copyright was secured on the date a work was published or, for unpublished works, on the date of registration. A copyright lasted for a first term of 28 years from the date it was secured. The copyright was eligible for renewal during the final, that is, 28th year, of the first term. If renewed, the copyright was extended for a second, or renewal, term of 28 years. If it was not renewed, the copyright expired at the end of the first 28-year term, and the work is no longer protected by copyright. The term of copyright for works published with a year date in the notice that is earlier than the actual date of publication is computed from the year date in the copyright notice.

Here is what I got from wikipedia...

"In the United States, all books and other works published before 1923 have expired copyrights and are in the public domain.[42] In addition, works published before 1964 that did not have their copyrights renewed 28 years after first publication year also are in the public domain, except that books originally published outside the US by non-Americans are exempt from this requirement, if they are still under copyright in their home country."

Ford doesn't print the service bulletins for Model A's, a publishing company does. Ford has nothing to do with it. Ford neither prints any materials for Model A Fords,nor do they make ANY parts for them other then spark plugs and points.

My new copy of the service bulletins, green cover, says on the lower left hand corner of the back cover:

"Reproduced under license agreement with Ford Motor Company." License #5001 3-1-94

Absolutely. And GM does the same. I would think even Toyota and the Japanese car makers will too, as their cars age. Now the Chinese, man those guys are reproducing everybody's stuff patents or copyrights be damned!!!

As far as Technical Service Bulletins, when I worked in a local Ford garage years ago they used to be kept 'under the counter'. Now I'm told you can find them on the Internet!
