Default 6 Volt LED Flasher

Has anyone been able to find an electronic flasher to run these great 6 volt LED tail lights that the vendors are selling? I bought the lights, figuring that in combination with my incandescent front signals, l wouldn't need a special flasher. Well, they work but the flash rate is too short. I realize that the circuit lacks the resistance to let the thermal flasher work as it should and that by adding another bulb in the line, it would flash the right way. It seems that they don't make these in 6 volt...

Mine work with a regular flasher, using 10 cp bulbs from Brattons in the cowl lights.

I'm also an aircooled VW nut, so used one made by Wolfsburg West:

http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/De...D=111953185BWW

I don't have LED lamps, but have heard of others using it OK with LEDs in their VW's. I guess you should check first!

The first thermal flasher we got was erratic and would alter rates, depending on what lights were on, and would just stop flashing sometimes. The Wolfsburg West one flashes the same rate all the time, and also flashes the lights as soon as the switch is on - there is not delay like out old thermal one had.

The WW unit looks like a good bet. Allan, did you have any issue with the the A being positive ground. Making a flasher is pretty cool, but my "to do" list is huge, and it's almost boating time here in Jersey... Rather buy it for 20 bucks and call it done.

Here is a flasher I bought from Fleet Farm about 8 years ago. It was the last one they had and they never reordered. It's made for 12 volts, but also works on 6 volts and will flash with only LED's and up to a 25 amp load. Sure wish I could find more of them.

Thanks Willie. I just picked up two more. For the first one I think I paid $3.98 at Fleet Farm.

Thanks Willie. I just ordered the same. Tom, do you have one of these on a 6 volt car now?

I see all the flashers you guys are talking about are 2 prong. I have a 3 prong with a series 900 signal-stat switch. the third prong is for the pilot light in the switch. Do you guys find the 2 prong flashers better, easier to find, last longer? The flashers I have been finding don't last worth hoot!

One thing to remember, most of the electronic flashers are for negative ground, just switch the polarity on the flasher and they will work just fine.

Buying is easier!

I didn't have an issue with positve ground... ours is 6 Volt negative ground

They just get wired in the other way though. I Fitted a peizo siren instead of the dash indicator to remind us they are on - the light in our old switch is 12V, so I haven't wired it up, and I'm so busy driving the thing, I'd never see the light anyway - buzzer is good!

I tried to build Tom Wesenberg's flasher as drawn and couldn't get it to flash at a nice slow cycle. I believe you need to replace the 130 ohm resistor with a variable potentiometer (ie 0 to 250 ohms) and vary the resistance until you get the rate you like.

A larger capacitor (more mfd.) would slow the flash rate.

There should be lots of info using "search"-option

I had to go forward once my "old-style-mechanical-flash-relay"
started burning while driving the car.... no fun.

I use "m-flash" (with buzzer) and its great:
http://motogadget.com/en/m-flash-blinkrelais.html
it wont care about load....

Next time i will use "m-stop"
http://motogadget.com/en/electrics/b...steuerung.html
it will automatic deactivate after 20sec
(no lights or buzzer necessary).

long distance greetings
Christoph

I just used a regular 6 volt 3 prong flasher and added 2 regular filament amber, bulbs in my engine compartment, works great.

I have a wiring diagram for a normal 3 pin thermal flasher for my turn signals but want to use LED's rather than bulbs. The Victor Auto Flasher EF32 mentioned below is a two pin flasher. How is this wired to the turn signal and what happens to the wire that normally goes to the third pin?
