In a world where technology for autos was still in its infancy, folks used their jack, tire irons, and a hand pump to do most tire repair. The tire was removed from the rim while the wheel was still on the car. Demountable rims eventually made a spare tire a reality but they have to be repaired as well. Sometimes it's easier to remove a tire while it's still on the car because it gives needed support for levering the tire bead over the rim.

Some folks use a plastic trash bag to remount the tire since it can be pushed right onto the rim with your hands in many cases then the bag is removed. There are You-Tube videos on this subject but many may be the demountable rim type. Rim protectors can be fabricated to protect them against scratching the finish.

Depending on how long the tires have been on and what the final outcome you are looking for, there are several ways. Normally you would used a bead breaker, looks like a big C clamp to get the clincher beads loose from the rim then irons to take the tire off. I have used C clamps in the past to do the job. If the tires/tubes are junk I would just cut them off.

Here is a sample, there were several types;

Oh! Good tire irons work best and more then one is needed. The bead used cord not wire so there should be lots of stretch (LOL) and doing it when the tires are warmed up really helps along with the suggestions to do it on the car and google how to do.

It's very easy if you leave the wheels on the car. Removing the wheels from the car makes it a 2 or 3 man job. Here's how:
