Default 32 Cabriolet rear view mirror

In the UK with a 1932 B Cabriolet. I need an exterior rear view mirror. Needless to say, this car does not have a frame to the window glass.

Any ideas as to a source for a suitable mirror without drilling holes in the body?

At present I use the headlights for a rear view reflection but not entirely satisfactory !

There are some that you can get that mount to the upper hinge pin that work pretty well.

Thanks Todd, I'll take a look. Is the Model A upper door hinge the same as a Model B ?

Todd, enquiries here in the UK suggest that a Model B hinge is 2 inches high and a Model A is 1.75" thus a Model A mirror won't fit.

Has anyone seen or fitted a B-17741 to a 32 B Cabriolet ?

Drake shows 2 hinge mount mirrors for '32's, neither listed for cabriolet. Many people on here can tell you the hinge length on the cars shown, if fitting to yours seems possible evaluate the angles shown and make a guess as to whether they would be useful. Original B or 46 truck mirror stands would be fairly easy to modify for different spans, but I'm guessing that the repros are zinc...?

Thanks Bruce. So-Cal show a mirror; part no B-17741 which is supposedly suitable for a 32 B Cabriolet......however in response to my Ebay "ask a question" query the replacement hinge pin is on 1/4" diameter????
This infers that the holes in the mirror mounting yoke are 1/4" which is clearly NOT the size of a B hinge pin?

As you say; almost certainly zinc (Mazak) and without doubt Vintique....we won't go there !

I'm thinking this is where some pieces of brass combined with the ingenuity of mankind may provide a solution !

Tiger...try to get an original B or 46 mount, similar to the ones shown at drake. Thet are steel forgings so you could alter as needed and then add a good mirror. There are alos longer ones for mid-1930's trucks (repros also shown on drake site), and an original one of those would offer some extra metal for cutting and shaping.

Thanks Bruce. Regrettably the UK doesn't have the vast amount of parts available that you guys in the States are privy to. I suspect that this may begin with a piece of two inch steel channel section and go from there?

What would be wrong with the Vintique mirror? I've had one on my sedan for over 20 years with no issues. Enough material to drill 1/4" holes to 11/32", stainless set screws to hold it in position, and while I'm not positive I think the mirror backing might be stainless as well. Oh and BTW, the Drake and the So-Cal mirrors referenced above are one and the same, Vintique.

Thanks Fordors. None of the suppliers show set screws to hold the mirror in position?
There's the replacement long hinge-pin but nothing else? Do you have a photo of your mirror fitted to your sedan? If so, can you email it to me at: [email protected] ?

OK, here is an update. I clicked on the mirror in the Drake brochure and I think it is a knockoff of the Vintique. There are a couple of subtle differences between the two and not only Drake but also an eBay vendor, "gearheadworld", sell this version. On what I call the k/o the tabs that the hinge pin passes through are on a 45* angle to the center line of the mirror arm. the "ghw" eBay listing photos clearly show what I am talking about. Also the "ghw" mirror has no set screws that I can see, but it looks like the Drake version uses 8-32 pan head screws to hold it steady on the hinge. Next look at the So-Cal mirror; the tabs on that one are straight in line with the mirror and it uses 8-32 set screws like the Vintiques I bought years ago.
We just got in, so I'll try to take and post photos tomorrow that show what I'm talking about. As of right now I feel right in recommending the So-Cal mirror, unless you know another source that handles Vintique.

Thanks Fordors. Having looked again at the SoCal mirror; this is Part No: VINTQ001175......affectionately known as B-17741 ....problem with this is that the mirror arm runs at 90 degrees to the hinge which not only looks somewhat out of place but may prove to be impractical to actually use ?

Ideally I need one with either a gentle curve to the arm or at least angled; say at 45 degrees to the hinge.

Look forward to seeing your photos.

I've decided to bite the bullet on this. I'm going to fabricate one from scratch. This will entail drilling the door hinge and fitting a curved profile plate with two 3/16 BSW screws. To this plate I'll weld a 5/16" diameter curved bar; then an oval mirror on the business end.

I'll try to show some photos of the finished article in a day or so; or maybe a week...

Wish me luck !

Thanks Tommy.......I've nearly finished making a mirror and as soon as I find out how to get the pictures on to the forum, they'll be there for all to see.
