1949 F2 Pickup

Mine is an F-3 and I love it! I too have the 4 speed crash box and it has taken some time to learn. I have about 800 miles since getting it road worthy and I'm still learning how to drive all over again.

I'm purposely leaving the 4 speed and big steering wheel with vacume wipers. I want to teach my son's to drive in this truck. If they learn in this truck they will be able to drive anything!

It'll be easier to turn your dollars with an F1 simply because there are more parts available for them which means less work but a nicely done F2 or F3 are nicely proportioned and look really good to me.

My F-2 rides better than my brother's F-1. People forget how stiff the old 1/2 tons really are...

Since people are posting (good looking) pictures, I will too.

My brother's F-1. Since this picture was taken, the whitewalls were replaced with 215 / 85 R16 black-wall radials. It helped both driving and the looks.

here is my 52 F3 project

I have made a few changes that I have tried to keep out of sight to retain the 50's stock look.

Original flathead V8
New 12v 1 wire alternator (would like to make it look like a stock gen.)
T5 5 speed trans with a stock looking shifter
New front leaf springs
Four inch drop front axle
Power steering pump mounted behind fan - not easily noticed
Toyota power steering box
Original steering column, wheel and horn retained for stock look
Hydro-boost power brake unit
Stock pedals clutch and brake
Four wheel disc brakes
New 16" wide whites - sent the 17" widow makers packing
New 9" Ford rear-end, geared to match the T5 trans
Rear C notch with 4 bar and adjustable coil overs

If your not looking for the upgrades you wont notice them. The 16" rims and tires fill the bigger wheel openings for a better look..... and the running boards are 7" off the ground.

I learned to drive a crash box 4 speed in a 49 F-3 in the early 70's. Tough as an old rooster! Worst part was blowing up 2 flatheads in it.

I had a 51 F2 and enjoyed the heck out of it. I don't exactly know what rear end it had in it, but it was stock, and I changed it over to a 302 c4 auto, and it flew down the road like a rocket, 75-80 easily no wind no howl, smooth!!! If the price is right they are scarce and I liked the longer bed look. It's all a matter of preference, I never owned anything just because it was more popular or I'd get more money in the long run. Because most of us by the time you buy it, work on it, enjoy it, then decide to sell it you'll never get truly your money back, because if you really are looking at from a monetary point of view, you'd don't factor in your labor, you only think you made a profit. When I did decide to sell a vehicle I owned I would tell my ol man/pop, I made this much money and he said you didn't make squat, I seen you work on that car for days, weeks, months and your time is worth something. I told him I can't look at it like that, because that would take all the fun out of it. He would say it don't work like that....
