Gene, that is the reason I'm calling the tour "If I'm Not There, Start Without Me". My daughters best friend is getting married, the weekend of the Moonshine Festival, and we've been invited so, I don't think I'll be playin' in the North Georgia Mountains this October... However, the Cigar City Flatheads will be well represented at the Festival.

Randy, I held off, because I wanted to make sure I would be able to attend... As it appears, I'll be going to a wedding that weekend and not to the Moonshine Festival. The Cigar City Flatheads will be there so, you'll all have to have fun without me this time...

Thanks Randy, this will be the first Moonshine Festival I've missed in over eight years... I'll be there in spirit with all the Cigar City Flatheads.

Anybody know of any in Dawsonville?

I'll start working on that... Keep checking here, and on the Cigar City Flatheads pages on FaceBook, for updates.

I used to enjoy it but last year tried my patience. The show is getting too big for the little town. We left mid afternoon going toward the main high way and traffic was backed up for miles trying to get into or through Dawsonville. I'll bet the locals hate to see it come.

The weather last year was perfect and the crowds really turned out.

Gene, I've got a conflict of events so unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the Moonshine Festival this year... Once that news get around, I'm sure the crowd will be much smaller... LOL

Well, just damn! Vic, I was all set to try again this year, but have had a total retinal detachment. Laser surgical repair, but temporarily blind in right eye, so travel and such on hold for several months.......maybe I should stop trying to plan and just allow life to happen? Regardless, the Lord does not give us more than we can handle, and this too, shall pass!

Marcus, I sure hope that everything turns out ok with your eye. I'm a bit disappointed that I'll miss the Shine Festival this year but... I'm looking forward to the next "Barner's Bash"... Maybe you and Margretha will be able to cruise down to Tampa for the "Bash"... Hope to see you soon.

Hey, don't get disheartened. You can save your vision if the retinal detachment is in the starting stage. Just go and see an eye specialist asap. There is no need to think twice about this, you have no other option. I'm sure about this because I had a similar situation in my life once- I got my retina detached and I consulted an eye specialist at a Lasik eye center in Auburn called Evergreen Eye Center. It was fortunate that I consulted him at the starting stage of the detachment and I was able to recover my eyesight. So I would advise you to go and see an eye specialist at the earliest and save your vision. Best of luck.

Thanks, guys: in fact, had already been through the laser surgery when I posted. Now have a gas bubble in the eye, with some limited vision. Doctor indicated that total vision should return as the bubble dissipates. We are so blessed to live in a time when these issues can be successfully addressed! Vic, Margretha and I agree: next 'Barner's Bash is right on top of the list!! And I hope the Piano Mansion was undamaged by all the recent rains (although I am sure your resident 'gator thoroughly enjoyed it)!!

Marcus, glad to hear that you will be seeing clearly once again. We were fortunate that both the house and garage emerged unscathed from the initial round of rains... However, one large Oak fell and did some damage to the garage septic system... We just had the tree cut down but, we'll have to get a large tractor/backhoe, etc. in, to remove the stump and root ball, before we can assess the damage to the septic... The fun just never ends...

But, the sun has been making a comeback, so I've taken advantage of that, to go topless...LOL

Marcus, I went through that about 18 yrs ago with my left eye. I detached twice and the Dr gave me no hope the second time but said he would do what he could. Turned out good and it is now the dominant eye. Modern medicine is great!

Vic - glad to hear the damage was not as serious as it could have been - and hopeful that removal of that rootball will NOT reveal addtItional damage. As I recall, had that tree come down the opposite direction, the famous Piano Playhouse (also referred as garage) might have been damaged - glad that it was not so!
Cecil - thanks for the words of encouragement: looking forward to Eastern Meet next year and another chance to visit......still think tinting the windows was the perfect "topper" to your EV8 PU!

I just went through cataract surgery on my left eye,(July 22) and I am almost sorry that I had it done. I can't see out of that eye now as well as I could before the surgery. Saw the doctor this morning and he says let's wait and take another look at it in 4 weeks. I sure hope it clears up. If not, I am going to leave the right eye alone. I don't want to wind up with the same in my right eye. I won't be able to oogle the womens like Clem does.

I can't make it to the Moonshine Festival this year, got conflicting events... So, I hope one of the guys that are local to the Dawsonville area will put something together for the Friday cruise. Last year Gene did an outstanding job on the tour, and yes, the BBQ was outstanding. I wish I could make it this year but, I'm sure you guys will have fun.

I'm going for the first time. Any special spot for Fordbarners? I'll be looking.
Will take all day Thursday to get there and have to stay out of town to have a room.
Was told to be there EARLY Friday morning.
Other advice?
Thanks,
Al

Al, sorry I'm going to miss the Moonshine Festival this year,. Last year they had all the Flatheads parked at the School by the Thunder Road Museum. Unless you registered to park 'downtown', you'll most likely be at the School. It's a short walk from the School to downtown, and you'll spot Kiwi Tony's RHD '36 ForDor Sedan, just of the circle around the Court House. In years past, we, the Cigar City Flatheads, have held a Friday Driving Tour but, because I can't make it this year, I don't know if any of the guys have set up a tour. If they did, hopefully they will post the info here. Best advice I can give you is; relax and have fun.

Al, like I said, I wish I could be there... We had to cancel our cruise up to NJ for the Race of Gentlemen, due to the expected bad weather so, I'm missing out on two cool events... Oh well... There's always next year... Have fun.

See if you can hook up with some of the guys like Kiwi Tony, Hamtown Al, Gene '50, '40 Coupe (also Gene), etc. Believe me, if I could get out of going to this wedding we've been invited to... I'd be there!!!

You know, Vic, if you REALLY wanted to catch up on going to cool events; you could go along with me and four other fools... er, FELLOWS, and drive to the 2016 roadster show. Of course, a seasoned traveler like yourself probably has driven out there every year and just kept quiet about it!
I can send you a windshield banner if you want to go.

Al, that trip is on the bucket list in fact, we've been talking about getting my '49 Cosmopolitan rag top ready to make the trip... Only things standing in the way are money and time... Have fun at the Moonshine Festival.

Vic, Grandadeo knows the way to the roadster show. Maybe you can get him to show you the way. Heck, he might go with you if you offer to lead and break the wind for him!! Knowing him; he'll tuck his roadster up behind your big Cosmo and draft you all the way!! He'll get great mileage and few bugs!! The Cosmo, on the other hand, might need a bath. I can see a long train of little roadsters tucked up behind the Cosmo like little chicks following the mother hen all the way to Pomona!
THAT would be a story!
Sorry you won't make Dawsonville but I'll see you next year... at the roadster show!!
Al

That's too bad that you can't make it to the Moonshine Festival, hope you didn't sustain much damage from the bad weather.

Great show but the crowds and traffic jams were too much last year.
Hope someone will take some good pics before it gets too crowded.

I am sorry that we are not going also. Having rental to take care of keeps me busy. Maybe next year. We just bought another house with 4 block garages. One for a Motor Home that I put our Motor Home in. Now I got more room at home in my big garage. Summer is over and it went fast for me. I do hate winter. Hope Tony keeps us inform an what going on down there. Still got that jar of shine that he gave me. Will his daughter be with him. My wife like her. Very nice girl. I don't know if Tony remember us. Miss seeing you Vic also. Maybe we can sneak down to Florida for a couple of weeks this winter.

I went on Sunday and heard that Saturday was the big day. In talking to one car owner, most cars had cleared out by end of day Saturday because there was no judging this year. His claim was that no one hauls a car for 500 miles just for a drive-in show. He tells me that last year all three days were madhouse busy. Sunday was a very slow day with about two dozen cars around the courthouse, nothing in the Ford lot and 40 or so cars in the City Hall parking area.

This is my first time going. The traffic was well under control from what I hear last year was like. That could be a result of few attendees. Parking was staged all around the event with further lots bussing people in every 15 minutes starting at 10:00. Since the event opened at 8:00 I had to move lots to walk in.

There were very few vendors, most selling unrelated stuff (junk). I loved seeing the cars but overall think the show is becoming a walk in the town bazaar.

The Dawsonville Moonshine Festival has always been a great show for me. Sometimes a good thing can go bad for various reasons, but hoping this is not the case with this show. Could not make the show this year due to a previously planned trip to Kentucky. Hoping things work out for a run to Georgia, through the Blueridge Mountains, next October.

I'm pretty sure most of the Sunday problem was the 100% chance of incoming rain after the 2 previous perfect days. The Ford area at the school was packed on Saturday, but with post-flathead cars. Most flatheads are usually downtown, with a few mixed in at Hall of Fame. Sunday was definitely a little slack. Its still one of the most awesome shows in my driving range, and judged cars seem to be only a small part. I very much enjoyed meeting Kiwi!

I agree this is great show that is growing. This is show the whole family can enjoy. There a lot shows out there is just for the car club members. Thanks to ever one that put together a great show.

Hey Ken, nobody goes there anymore... It's too crowded... LOL In the past, we (the Cigar City Flatheads) have driven up from the Tampa Bay area on the Thursday prior to the event. Additionally, we have held our own "cruisin'" events on the Friday of the Festival and attended the Festival on Saturday, parking at Thunder Road or at the School. We've always used Sunday as our travel day to drive back to Florida. I've always enjoyed the Moonshine Festival, sorry to have missed it this year but looking forward to next years event.

Other than a poor Sunday attendance, can anyone compare the Friday/Saturday attendance this year to last year or prior years?

Sunday seems to always have lighter attendance than Saturday. Many cars are already in the area on Thursdays even though there is no "official" area for them until sometime Friday, with no real designated areas for show cars or people who just drive or haul their old car there. Thursday and Friday seem to be car guy days, with the public coming and the "show" on Saturday. Just my two cents.

To those who missed the event, it was awesome! Lots and lots of fords, some with flatheads and some without. There are about 150 spaces on and around the square and all were filled. 1940's were predominant but everything from model A's to 1960's were represented. There was even one chevrolet and one studebaker, I don't know how they got there. The car show and swap meet are a quarter mile away and there was a little bit of everything there. There was still another show going on around the school. There's always next year....-RG
