One correction is in order here. Most synthetics are NOT made from oil pumped from the ground. It is made from scratch. Castrol is one exception. They make theirs from crude oil and call it synthetic. I guess they found a loop hole. Gas prices today are probably a bargin all right but we still need to conserve and open the oil fields in Alaska. I just hate to be so dependent on Middle East and Russian oil.

Oil seeps from the sea floor off Malibu, but Barbra Streisand would find the sight of a rig upsetting. Jeb Bush (!) refused to allow drilling off the FL Gulf coast. The world is upside down.

The best synthetic oil uses a mixture of polyalphaofin and esters (a molecule of alcohol and a molecule of acid mixed forms esters. Of course, additives of various sorts are mixed to protect seals, etc. The esters keep the engine clean and is a superior lubricant as well. The Germans used an ester based lubricant for bearings in their jet engines in WW11 because petroluem oil would break down and ruin the bearings. They invented the stuff. Thank God they were too late when they did perfect it.

Graeme

Didn't have enough time to see too much at Horopito.

As regards Oil prices if it was too cheap we'd waste it even more.

They used to say that driving at 50 mph rather than 60 mph saves you 15% in gas.

As a teenager ( & generally broke ) I used to sometimes disconnect the accelerator pump linkage on the 39 sedan until payday.

As far as the Oil Companies go they are probably all crooks, but in this country it seems that it is generally Shell who are last to put their prices up & first to lower them.

Regards

Chris. NZ.

No Problems about Horopito Chris, thanx anyway. I have been corresponding with Macs and it sounds like they have the correct switch. As far as oil Companies go I'm a Shell customer, have been for years except when Challenge came on the market here. When Caltex took them over, I returned to the flock ( get flybuys at Shell too!).

Have a good easter Chris.

If I got a compass & changed the polarity of the needle it would point south. The dude that invented it got it wrong!
