Default 239 flathead head gaskets

Hello I am replacing the head gaskets on my flathead , and I would I would like to know about cleaning the block what sort of sand paper could I use to not scratch the block..

You should not use sandpaper to prepare the block or heads for new head gaskets. You don't want to get any grit into the cylinder bores....

Ok so try and soak it with carb cleaner then

I think you will find the scraper posted by Bob C to work very well. I have used it on my engine. No damage.

Use a long handle razor blade scraper,
it saves wear and tear on the knuckles
and fingers!
