51MERC has a good memory. For my Mallory dual point distributor # YL 2527501 the instructions say to set points at .022 " with a dwell of 26 degrees each and a total dwell of 31-36 degrees. I set gap at .019". I used NAPA points Eichlen CS 2301 and Eichlen condenser MA3 .25 to .28 MFD.
Hope this helps.

Really hate to see anyone adjusting timing with dwell.. A timing light does it so much better. A 2 degree change in dwell will change timing 4 degrees, however it will effect coil saturation and build up time. Dwell should remain fixed for proper coil function.
Put some fuel in that hole for slight ping.....

The newer Mallorys seem to have a bit too much mechanical advance and are adjustable on the car by bending the spring tabs out ward to limit the advance.. Look into the breaker plate hole and id the springs , one is haevier than the other , if the ping is light throttle just position spring and tab under the inspection hole and use a screw driver to slightly bend the spring tab out ward and test drive . Ping under heavy throttle bend the heavy spring .......works like a champ.......

I have two "later" Mallory's (with the red cap). The first one I bought came with a "key" (a piece of stepped plastic) that you could use to limit the total advance. If your "early late" Mallory has one of these, use it and you'll be fine. If you have a "late late" Mallory, follow Bubba's advice.

tubman: My Mallory came with one of those little stepped plastic keys. Did that distributor come correctly preset from Mallory? I never used that key. Should I have? It is a stock 8BA with a 390 Holley. Thanks.

I believe mine came correctly set from the factory, but that does not mean yours was. I would at least use the "key" to check it. Do you have the instructions that came with the distributor? IIRC, they have a section on how to use that "key". If not, it's self-explanatory, as I believe the "key" has the advance marked on it (it fits in an opening in the breaker plate). I think I have a set of Mallory instructions in my shop somewhere; the problem is finding them.

Thank you. I think I have the instruction sheet as I saved the box. Will take a look. Appreciate your help. JIM
