Default Wood Graining

How many Model A's had wood grain interiors? Were there only certain models (body styles) ? I have a '30 town sedan and my wife is going to wood grain the inset panels on the dash rail. The dash rail was marred and I don't have the original paint.

Thanks, Whizzernick, I'm thinking it was only the deluxe models or the more expensive priced.

The Judging Stds. will give all the details but if your car is a Town Sedan and not a Standard Fordor, the entire dash rail, the vertical strips along the sides of the windshield and all interior window mouldings were wood grained.

I have forgotten the the exact number, but I think it is eighteen or nineteen pieces. 7 window frames, 6 garnish (under the windows) the dash, the two stanchions (16) and I'm sure I forgot something.

A couple of rattle cans of maroon and some walnut stain along with a 39 cent brush and you can make it look very professional after minimal practice on the backside or even the front of your pieces. Then another rattle can of your favorite clear coat. I got a couple of samples from my paint store and experimented. I could almost lose a small piece on top of a hundred year old mahogany table. Took about two days to do my coupe. Mostly prep as in any paint job.

I have looked at several videos on wood graining but none use your process which I like. Any suggestions? How do you do it?

I'm 99% sure that's how mine was done sometime in the past. A couple of pieces still have a few 39¢ brush hairs in them...

Terry, I count 14 pieces in my Town Sedan. I'm not sure what you mean by "stanchions".

on the town sedans (SW), the stanchions are the front window vertical jamb side pieces.
Also, the metal header panel at the top of the windshield is grained as well, same for other models, I believe. Some folks use a maroon/brown enamel spray 1st, then black brush-on to simulate the (mahogany) grain. Can't use lacquer clear over most rattle can paints, so suggest using clear from the same manufacturer as the sprays, etc. Don't forget to spray the back of the dash which is visible from outside the windshield.

I just went and checked my 1930 Town Sedan, and there are 16 separate pieces that receive wood graining, but not the windshield header.

I'm not trying to convince anyone that is building a show car to try my method. Show quality it is not. but then I still have to see any of the repo graining that looks like the graining on original cars. I have a friend with several that have never been touched and .....well you've probably seen more than I have. I pick those broom straws that fall out of my 39 cent brush out before the clear coat. That helps. Practice is good also. But I doubt you will get by the Judges, it didn't cost you enough.
