Unhappy ??? ... say what ... ???

Now I am old and thought I had seen most anything out of FOMOCO (1954/ ).

But someone is going to have to sit me down (with a cold one) and explain this one -

4 speeds shifted through column shift. Reverse under dash. Those Hurst shifters are getting expensive.

Question Re: ??? ... say what ... ???

But the 1961 FORD 390CI/375HP came through with a 4/S with floor shifter thrown in trunk for dealer install. There was no factory install.

What am I looking at?

It's not nice to be trying to trick old guys ...

You really gotta want a column shifter to do it that way

The way he is cranking that steering wheel around it looks like power steering also.

Looks like a home brew 4 speed swap into a car that originally had a three speed manual. The column linkage would be very close to matching the trans. arms for 1st through 4th; just a little fabbing and bending needed. Add a home made cable/lever for reverse and good to go!

The Hurst Comp + is $480 now. They weren’t cheap even when you could buy one for an old Ford. I’ve never seen the handle under the dash, around here (because of the fishing fleet) the item of choice was a Morse cable with a turn to lock handle. Poor man’s solution when you found the right pattern 4 speed in a junk yard.

The Factory Parts Manual--Text and Illustrations- mentions only Standard and O/D column shift mechanisms for "A" body Fords 1960-1964.
I agree someone REALLY wanted a column shift for that Ford.

A fellow named Randy Conner did that many years ago. I visited his place in 2002 or 2003 to talk 57s and get a couple of parts for my Ranchero project. He had built the 57 with a four speed and wanted to keep it a "sleeper". No idea when he did the change, just remember taking a ride with him. He was "Mr. 57 Ford" much like "The Ranchero Wizard" was, unfortunately both are gone.

Hello Back in early 1980s T-Birders were put BW t-10s in place of T-85 OD trans, used OD handle for reverse. Be going on for awhile.

... hmmph ...

So they retained the 3S floor shifter and used the OD cable to find reverse?

Makes sense. Guess I missed that (most likely sitting in the MOOSE talking about how fast those big trucks will run ... ).

Now there are two factoids I learned today.

You now something? I still have a 1973 COUGAR 351 CJ F/4/S (fully gone through) w/ FORD ISSUE HURST SHIFTER.

Guess I figure I will be buried with it ...

I sold my 72 CJ XR7 to a friend several years ago after bad results from Dr. I'm still here but not the best shape either. Friend not the best now but his son will inherit everything. Funny how them CJ"s even impress die hard chevy guys.

Back in the early 70,s , my buddy had a 1967 Cougar xr7 with the 390 ,4 speed. First to second was a real neck snapper. Would love to have that car today.

I did another of backyard engineering in my misguided youth, but I never saw something like that 4 speed column shift, and I did more than my share of junkyard raiding.

I also spent a lot of time in salvage yards, back yards and performance equipment was traded and sold everywhere then. Maybe if I had a good week I could buy some factory stuff.

Mercedes and Peugeots both had 4 speed column shifts. Not sure of the time frame but a buddy in HS had a '57 Mercedes 220S with one.

If I am not mistaken, one of Jeff Norwell's 57's is a 4 speed column shift.
