35 shock removal
I am helping someone with their '35 and have questions about getting the shocks off.
I found a post here saying that the rears may need the clamped portion of the arm spread to get them off. Any other tricks? For the fronts, the front nut is easy to get to. Is there a trick to getting the rear nut off? It looks like the only access is through a small hole in the cross member. I had a hard time getting a wrench on it let alone being able to swing it. Other than that I used plenty of penetrating oil... Thanks, Scott Last edited by 1939mars; 09-06-2024 at 09:41 PM. |

Re: 35 shock questions
You have to take the bolt all the way out of the arm,

Re: 35 shock removal
Thanks for the rear info. Someone out there has to have something for the fronts. Do I just use a crow-foot wrench?

Re: 35 shock removal
The original front shocks the arm is pressed/ shrunk onto the splined shaft, the cover is crimped on —- one of the hardest shocks to take apart in a manner to be able to rebuild— there are later shocks that were used for replacement

Re: 35 shock removal
The front shock should be considered one piece, arm and body, do not try to remove the arm. Remove the shock link either from the shock arm or the perch bolt.

Re: 35 shock removal
The bolt comes thru from the back on the rear shocks If I recall .Once you remove the arm you should be able to use an open and wrench to undo the nut.Pull the rear wheel and take a pic then post it here.

Re: 35 shock removal
I won't be able to get a picture until Tuesday and I am not sure how visible it will be anyway as it is kind of up in there...
In the mean time I finally found an image from a '35 brochure. I am trying to figure out how to get the nut off of this front shock mounting bolt at the arrow. You can see that the head is on the outboard of the frame and the nut is on the inside. The front cross member and other parts seem to be in the way such that there is about a 1 inch hole to get to the nut. -Scott |

Re: 35 shock removal
On the front shock its from the inside.A thin deep socket maybe.I have had several 35 and 36's. The shock mounts forward of the axle. I have reversed them after changing to a dropped axle. In one case I went to tube shocks.
