Second throwout bearing question
If there is an airgap, why do you hear a bad throwout bearing when you have no load on the clutch pedal. when you release the pedal and you here it grinding, it has to be in contact with the pressure plate fingers to spin. Thanks

Re: Second throwout bearing question
If the bearing is bad it may because it was in constant contact with the fingers of the clutch ~~~

Re: Second throwout bearing question
There is a spring on the throwout bearing/bearing hub to retract it off of the pressure plate. The spring may be missing or damaged and allowing the bearing to ride against the pressure plate. Part #7562
Noticed in your other post that the vehicle is a 1950 F1 so I added the diagram for it, same part. Last edited by JSeery; 04-01-2015 at 02:41 PM. |

Re: Second throwout bearing question
Sure it isn't the pilot bushing/bearing? Or the front trans bearing?

Re: Second throwout bearing question
I also go with trans bearing. If you put in neutral and can hear it put in gear and see if it stops.

Re: Second throwout bearing question
Was the retract spring in good condition when you took it apart? If it was not retracting the bearing that would explain both the bad bearing and the noise.

Re: Second throwout bearing question
Pretty sure when in neutral with the clutch engaged the engine is spinning the tranny shaft the pilot is riding on. If bad to the point of binding or partially binding on the needle bearings in the throw out bearing you'll hear it. The slip fit of the throw out to the tranny shaft will still let the throw out bearing spin. Pretty sure that's what you were hearing. Also maybe due to linkage wear / movement and not frequent enough adjustment may have been making light contact with the fingers.

Re: Second throwout bearing question
In neutral with the clutch out (released), engine running, the trans input shaft is rotating the same speed as the clutch/flywheel/pilot bearing. So if you hear noise under those conditions, it's either the release bearing or the trans input shaft bearing. If the release bearing isn't touching the fingers, then it's the trans bearing.
