Default Drum and axle compatibility

My 35 ford has post 35 "wide five" steel artillery wheels and hubs with mechanical brakes. If I can find 35 open "spider" drums or closed drums with hubs, will these direct fit my axles or if not, what am I getting into? The artillery wheels just don't look right on a 35. Thanks.

The Rear wheels should be easy depending. You don't mention the wheels you prefer to run. It makes a bit of difference but not much. If the car is otherwise original, then '35 wheels will work nicely with '35 drums. If you want the more common 1940+ wheels, then the 1940+ drums are the least bother. If adapter rings are required I won't even try to explain the two distinct types as it seems to be an odd source of confusion. '35 front drums are a one year only and usually showup when you don't really need them. Good Luck: Fred A

Rears yes....and assuming the front drums are 36, yes, 35 drums will directly fit.

What am I saying? Drums '40 and beyond don't have the right offset for a stock '35 front. Sorry: Fred A

I'd like to run 35 wire wheels. As to the front drums, do you think I could get a machine shop to drill my wide five drums in a 5 x 5.5 pattern and install studs and spacers to support the 35 wire sheels?

There is some possibility front and rear drums are 37 as the motor and trans are 37 (v8 60hp). In 1978 two cars could have been combined to make this one. How do I tell 37 axles from 35 or 36?

Quickest and easiest method; is it running 'rod' brakes? If so, I'd suggest that its got 36 drums, if so, 35 drums will go directly on.
