Red face 6V electric Fuel Pump

I am having a "senior moment" so bear with me.

I want to install an electric fuel pump on my positive ground system. One wire is tan the other wire is black.

Which one is ground and therefore goes to the power source?

I was thinking that if I got the wires backward the pump would run backward and in fact I reversed the wires while using the battery as a source and the pump "died".

Why the elec pump??
My car came with many extra parts including several fuel pumps. One was "new" and unused. I installed it and gas was pissing out of the side so I figured the diaphragms had rotted with age.

Your thoughts?

My 6 volt Carter vane type (+ ground) has the polarity marked for proper flow direction. Does your pump have a model no. on it?

why are you installing an electric pump, stock carb or down draft? need to be specific on a Weber which will require 4-5 psi, or dual 81's, or a single 97?

Pumps are polarized, wire it through a relay as the relay coil does not care, (ign coil) but the pump will/may care and wire it Common and Normal open. and the neutral leg on the common of the relay and will need a fuel filter, just trying to help.

I disconnected my pump, just another thing to worry about, if it breaks down, I still travel over 60mph with my 97 downdraft.
