Default How to pull column tube off the steering box?

I’ve built a ‘39 box to go into my ‘35 Ford coupe. After some clean-up I’ll be using the ‘35 Column tube (51-3509) and column drop. The ‘35 box and column are out on my work bench. I’ve pulled the clamp off the tube, but can’t free the tube from the box (yes, the lock at the column drop is open) Am I missing something? Do I need to apply some heat? Obviously I don’t want to pound on it. Thanks

Peen the sheet metal column in the area where the clamp was removed to expand it. It should loosen enough to pull it off (no heat)

Its basically a slip fit.Might have some slight rust .Carefully clamp the tube in your vise then try turning the old box.

Clamp the box in a vise or bolt it down, then grab the column drop and twist it back and forth with your hand and pull it off at the same time. Make sure the steering wheel key is out or it wont slide past the bushing. Dont clamp the tube or you will end up with dents

Do it skidmarks way.My vise has provisions below the jaws to clamp round tubes snugly without damage also.

When pulling it, take care not to hit yourself on the chin with it.

40 plus years ago my friend did it when pulling the column surround on an English Ford 100E. He still has the scar.

If you're going to repaint it. Put alittle heat on it with a torch, enough heat to were you get alittle smoke off it but not red. That will help break the crud loose
