Default 78-7052 transmission front oil seal

I wanted to make 100% sure of this before I posted this. The question has come up before regarding the correct installation of this oil seal in the front bearing retainer of the 32-48 type 3 speed transmissions. The modern replacement seal is similar to the original Ford seal in that it is fully encased in a steel shell, although the replacement has a neoprene type lip seal material rather than the original leather material.

The idea is to keep oil in the transmission, so the lip is meant to curl in toward the transmission. With the new seal, it's hard to detect the angle of the lip. We are confirming that the lip angles "in" toward the side of the seal with the small seam on the face of the outer shell. So, you push on this side of the seal when pressing it into the front bearing retainer. The attached picture shows both sides of this modern seal, but the seam is visible on the picture to the right. Hopefully, this will answer this question for everyone that wondered.

If it is possible to see where the tensioning spring is, that side will normally be towards the fluid that wants to be retained. In this case towards the transmission.

Generic rule for any seal. The modern seals with the secondary dust shield lip can be a bit confusing, but looking for the spring can clear it up.

Mart.

The lip of the seal can be pried back to see the spring.....I did that of course and confirmed that it’s on the side with the seam.

Maybe a side view diagram/sketch would help. I'm not sure if we're talking about the lip of the neoprene or the lip of the metal part of the seal facing toward the tranmission. Jack E/NJ

The rubber portion that does the sealing. The outer metal case has a seam but no lip. The garter spring can only go on the lip side. Dust type seals will generally have no garter spring. This link has a cross section but it isn't a fully encased seal. It's only partially encased. http://86.43.94.97/moodlecp9a/mod/gl...ncept=Lip+Seal
