Default Another trans related question: tooth count.

Edit: I goofed - please read my reply (#5).

I promise I have googled and searched this:

I am elbows deep in a trans that was original to a 1941 pickup.

I counted the teeth on the cluster gear: 29. I counted the teeth on the input gear: 16.

I don't have a whole lot of transmission experience, but I thought the only viable combos were 15/29 or 16/28. I have often heard and have quoted myself the "rule of 44".

These gears have run in this transmission and ran together very smoothly before I pulled it apart.

I suspect they may be replacement gears, they do not have Ford markings.

The cluster bears the marks "RG CO. 316-11B USA NH"

The Input (MDG) bears RG CO. 216-1 NF USA"

Richmond Gear???

Any ideas?

Mart.

The "green book" shows the cluster for your '41 truck to be 67-7113-A. It uses helical cut gears with 29-24-17-15 teeth from front to back, and a length of 5.59". Matching gears is a tough job, as many, many types were used. Over the year, many transmissions were rebuilt, often with different gear sets from stock. The information is contained on page 312 of the green book.

I too thought that the "Rule of 44" always applied. Apparently, not ALWAYS according to a quote from Hoop a couple of years ago when he attempted to set me straight......

"The "Rule of 44" always applies unless ... the "Rule of 43" applies.

Check part numbers 67-7017 and 11Y-7017. Both mate to 67-7113-A.

Yes, I've run into a set. "

How about a picture of the gears and the case part #?

Guys, I am SO sorry. I went out and looked again. 28T on the cluster. I must have been tired before and got it wrong even though I did it a couple of times.

Common or garden 16/28.

So the earth hasn't tilted off it's axis and the rule of 44 (ok, maybe 43 sometimes) remains unbroken.

With apologies.

Mart.
