Default Just received my EVR from Fun Projects

I have a 6 volt pos. ground system. The instructions that came with the EVR say to loosen the 3rd brush nut to adjust the brush and then to retighten the nut. I moved my 3rd brush to the top (min output) without loosening anything. Obviously, I did not tighten it. What am I missing here? I sure don't want to start a fire or destroy a $64 EVR. I wanted to ask this before I installed the new EVR. Thanks as always.

I think yours is like mine where there is no nut to loosen.

I just installed one few weeks ago. Most generators do not have a nut to tighten, there's a small internal spring finger that provides friction and prevents the brush ring from slipping on its own. Maybe the powerhouse style uses a locking nut?

The EVR works great by the way!

smittykid,

For the fun products device, should you set it for the Minimum or Maximum Output ?

Common sense would be to set it for the maximum and then have it regulate to the amount needed.

The maker recommends 8 amps maximum output. Any more and you risk damaging the regulator.

I have a new Fun Products EVR that I cannot install because I do not have the original style post on the generator. If the post has been replace with a wire coming out of the case, there is no way to attach it to the EVR. Works with original post only.

I set the output of the generator with an in line ammeter for 12 amps, before installing the EVR. I then swapped out the cutout for my new EVR. It has worked great for 5 years now. The ammeter on the dash is not an accurate method of setting the generator output.

15 amps is the absolute maximum according to the instructions....

http://www.funprojects.com/pdf/10505R6.PDF

I also had a generator with no output stud, just a wire...but they are available and not too difficult to install.

Neither of my two generators(one spare) have the lock nut on the third brush...

Mine is like that. All I had to do was attach the generator output wire to the input of the EVR with a little 12/24 screw/nut combo with the screw cut down to about a quarter inch long.

Marc,
In the instructions in bold print it says, "Only the generator 3rd brush assembly will be adjusted and under no circumstances should the 3rd brush assembly be set for more than 15 amps of charge".
Hope this helps.

There is a possibility of some confusion here.

The 6 volt model supplies 15 amps.

The 12 volt model supplies 8 amps.

1. If instructions say 8 amps then directions are for the 12 volt regulator.

2. If 15 amps the direction sheet is for the 6 volt version.

If you set 12 volt regulator for 15 amps it will be damaged.

If you set 6 volt regulator for 8 amps the battery might not get fully charged if you use the headlights.

3. Also if you flash the generator with regulator installed with either version, damage will occur.

Sorry for the confusion, I have the 12 volt model which us limited to 8 amps. I didn't realize the 6 volt model was different.

Group,

I didn't realize that the limit was 15 amps. This device is a "shunt" regulator meaning that it shorts out the generator for a variable amount of time depending on the needed current for the car. For example, if 15 amps is needed, then the device doesn't do anything. If 1 amp is needed, then it shorts out the generator for almost all the time.

The type that Tom W makes is a different design. His controls the actual output from the generator to provide the needed current by varying the current to the field coil to vary the output. Thus, if you need more, it makes more.

Both work, but I like Tom W's better.
