Re: shippers;
Just one(1) opinion from past experiences.
1. First, decide if you want an open trailer shipment or closed trailer. 2. Call several shippers .... Hemming Motor News has a few ads .... not too much different from throwing dice .... one may be passing along a similar route that you desire ..... timing of shipment is important ...... some of these shippers are like Santa .... they travel all over the U.S.A. 3. After a few calls, you will get a feeling for shipping cost based on so much per mile. 4. I called about (10) a few years ago .... prices per mile did not vary much .... most were real gentleman who offered suggestions on who to try to call. 5. Hope others will offer shipping suggestions .... |

Re: shippers;
Funny thing you could do here. Use the Search function. OR even look in the Sticky at the top of the page!

Re: shippers;
I used Uship back in Dec, worked out good, got a great price because I didn't need it shipped yesterday, and could wait a week or two for the shipper to put a load together.

Re: shippers;
Why not just say " Try using the Search function or look in the Sticky at the top of the page". No need to start out with a snide remark. Remarks like that can deter some folks from asking legitimate questions.

Re: shippers;
Who ever you use, make sure to see proof of insurance. Passport Transport and Intercity Lines provide great service.

Better yet, have your own insurance on the vehicle before it even moves.......... went through that and lost a car that was supposedly insured. dont think there isnt a shipper out there that isnt doctoring documents-anything can happen. |

I advise all my customers that ask to start their collector car insurance (Haggerty, Grundy, Etc) immediately after the purchase. Once you pay, the seller is under no obligation to insure the vehicle. Also God forbid something happens, you will never get what you deserve from a cargo insurance company & many times you will end up getting NOTHING. They will fight you to the point you will have to get a lawyer & end up spending more than it is worth & will give up. This is what they count on. This is also why your choice in transporters is very important...You don't want "some guy with a truck & trailer". Do a Google search of them & look at their trucks & trailers. Nothing is more telling than something that looks like a "garbage skow" coming into your neighborhood! Re: shippers;
Truly Vintage got a call from the buyer of my 1901 Olds. He shopped for the "best" price and this is what he got from a south Florida shipper. The shipper sub-contracted a couple of creeps that abandoned this carriage in a downpour, and i recovered it for him. Been getting death threats from the buyer in Redding, CA. ever since.

Re: shippers;
Some of the major vintage car insurance companies will not cover a vehicle if it is in a "for hire" carrier, that is why it is important that the transporter provides legitimate proof of insurance. Your insurance company will cover your car if you are transporting it but if you give your car to a for hire carrier, the carrier is expected to cover the insurance-after all, the car is in their possession and if they are a responsible carrier, they should be responsible for it. The larger companies such as Passport and Intercity provide this and will provide written proof of this.
I agree, as soon as you pay for a car, you should get insurance for it. However, as a buyer, you need to be aware who will be responsible if something happens while it is being transported by a hired carrier. I sell A LOT of cars-many of which are very high end-and I know this to be a fact. I have been doing this for decades. Bottom Line: Please do your homework. Re: shippers;
Reason for your last sentence? Pretty damning..
after being told I was covered for up to 300k of insurance, the carrier took off. Yes, I could have gone down to FL and filed a claim with the sheriff, seeking damages, but wasnt worth my time. In the end I lost and learned a valuable lesson. NEVER TRUST ANYONE. INSURE YOURSELF. NOT THE "SHOULD BE COVERED BIT" |

Re: shippers;
Out of ignorance, I used a broker to move mine from Colorado to southern Illinois. As said, I didn't know any better, but did use an online rating AND a checked them out with the BBB. The broker put it out for bids, then had to wait for a driver to pick it up. I did specify a closed carrier. I don't remember if I had the car insured before shipping, but think I would have. (I had the title in hand.)
Perhaps I was just lucky, but got the car with no problems. I just had to meet the driver in a location where he could unload the truck. I did have the seller photograph the car very well before he put it on the truck. I might add that he was hauling some other cars that were worth a heck of a lot more than my lowly Model A.
