Messed Up The Fan?
This past Friday we put on a new Leakless Water Pump and reused the fan that was on the car. This is the only Model A fan I've seen up close, but I guess it would be a new, one piece fan. When we put it together I was concerned that the nut was going too far down on the threads to make the cotter pin useful. Unfortunately I didn't tighten up the nut for the fan. This is all my fault. I drove the car for about 30 miles the other day and for part of that I could hear a loud rattle that I thought was the generator, but I see, after removing that and tightening up the three bracket screws, that the water pump pulley is loose on the shaft. So......have I ruined things or will I just be able to tighten things up and go on? Is it possible that since the nut would screw down past the usefulness of the cotter pin that the taper on one or the other is bad?

Re: Messed Up The Fan?
Put a washer between the fan hub and nut so the cotter pin will fit correctly. This was necessary on two of my two blade aluminum fans. If the taper on the shaft is ruined it’s a no go…

Sometimes the tapers don't match. I've not seen your problem, but, if the tapers seem to match then tighten them and do what has to be done.

Re: Messed Up The Fan?
I would pull the fan back off and have another look.Where you ran it loose there is no telling where the key is now.Might be still in place, might be gone, and might be in a wrong spot and give you a false impression of being tight. If you're concerned about the taper being off you can take the blade off, scribble all over the shaft with a magic marker, then twist the fan hub over the shaft a few times. You will see your contact points by what got scraped off.
