exhaust pipe wrap

What is recommended for an exhaust pipe wrap ? I will use it on the headers and exhaust pipes that route under the floor boards in the '40 coupe. I have a heater so I don't need anymore than that. Thank you Fordbarners.

Thermal heat wrap is not particularly effective. It is easier to make and install sheet metal shields on the floorboard area above the pipes.

I used the commercially available(Summit-Jeg's, etc) exhaust wrap material for the headers and exhaust pipes on the dyno and it made a BIG difference in the heat radiating out into the work area AND, it reduced the opportunity for arm burns.

Second the use of header wrap. I used it on my Avatar after hearing complaints from my Mrs. The wood boards don't seal out the heat.

Follow directions. I did loosen, and drop the pipe ( less work than a '40 ) to ease the wrap process.

I've used exhaust wrap on several of my cars very effectively. I usually half lap it for double the protection.

Any particular type or manufacturer on exhaust wrap favored ? The exhaust pipes and headers are currently out of the car so before I put them back in I will wrap them. Which Mfg has the best stainless ties ? Thank you Fiordbarners.

Keep in mind the heat retained in the pipe will eventually cause the metal to become brittle. Also if it gets wet it will retain moisture until heated up enough to dry out. I have seen more than one set of headers ruined by heat wrap after prolonged use. I would do heat shields if possible.

I agree with "Supereal." A heat shield is the way to go. I was having exhaust heat (NOT gases), work itself into the cab. To get around this I made a simple shield from sheet metal and bolted it to existing frame holes. Works great! I doubt if I have $3 invested.
