Re: 36 stainless welting
I bought my welting from Joe's Antique Auto. The individual pieces took a moderate amount of rebending to fit correctly, but I've not been able to get them fitted as well as the original ones. Probably just me being impatient.
I had the side panels removed, but you shouldn't have to do so and the fenders stayed in place. I put the horn side panels in place with all the bolts in, but left loose. Mine were off the car for engine removal. You can then carefully pry a gap between the fender and the side panel using a thin flat blade screwdriver to give enough room to slip the flap in place. I had a helper hold the welt down flush with the fender while I tightened the bolts. The headlight then went on last. If you haven't unbolted those side panels, there are 6 bolts on each side to loosen, they all have blind nuts. Here's a picture of the joint without the side panel. John

Re: 36 stainless welting
I had the same problem with my 40. I cheated an stapled the welt in place. I think it would be possible to glue the welt in place, with some of the new type glues.

Re: 36 stainless welting
I had a Drake repro SS welting. They did not fit and had a weird bend in them that did not conform to the fender. I ended up searching and buying original welting pieces for both fenders, They fit fine and were fairly easy
to install. gnolnor |

Re: 36 stainless welting
I have a Drake set and they do not fit well. Steele has chrome welting. They were going to try and send me a sample . They may look good , I may buy enough to make a set. Thanks a lot for the info.

Carefully form the welting to fit the shape of the fender, then mark the bolt holes and cut a U shape into the welting fiber strip at each bolt. Carefully slide the welting into place, reshaping it as you go, as needed. Once the welting is in place go around the fender tightening the bolts. Don't snug the bolts up, work you way around the fender. Take tour time, HAST MAKES WASTE. Actually the stainless welt is installed just like fabric welt, just a little more time consuming.
