Paul thanks for posting:; that's a nice way to preserve patina and I think he got it into 3rd gear without grinding

Interesting.. I think it would look better if they added some flattener to the paint so it wasn't so shiney tho.

Like a permanent Gibbs Oil coating. I assume original paint under the clear, right. The clear coating will darken and crack due to UV radiation? I think you will better protect the original paint with the Gibbs oil, right?

Most clears today have UV screens and absorbers in them but they can fail in time if the proper amount of clear coat isn't applied.

the Gibbs oil is far less shiney, but it is interesting.. anything to keep the original paint.

Looks like another tacky/bad idea like I might envision seeing on Gas Monkey garage. fake patina on panels that are far to straight to have that kind of look/patina - but far too rough and distressed to be that glossy at the same time. Interesting. Just not my cup of tea.

I have yet to see a Model A with a more beautiful and authentic patina than Crosscut's AA. Every time I see that truck my jaw drops.

I use satin varnish to avoid the shine, but to have a bit of sheen.

it would look better if it was over original paint. the fenders or bodies never had grey primer on them. and the fenders never had red primer originally. I also noticed that it is a Canadian, just maybe they did things a little different up there. A, only joking on that one.

My opinion is that there are only 2 possible car finishes for an antique car.
1) Original Paint...even if worn badly still can look nice and very interesting..because it is original. Kind of like an old clock face, worn but shows the effects of time and it make its own statement about the passage of time.
2) a Car with no original paint left, no primer left or body work too.
This type of car should be professional painted with the best you can afford.
And the results can be astounding..It can look show room fresh.
A new paint job should never be artificial stressed to look tattered and old.. because this is SCHLOCK at its best.
These are Only the opinions of one OLD Man.

This is what 87 years really looks like.
You can't paint it on.

Paul,
Thank you for posting that car, SUPERB! It even BOUNCED to the music beat.
NOW, that's a REAL WORLD MODEL A, with its' HISTORY showing.
I just moved my HUGE Steamer Trunk in, to use for a JET-FUEL COFFEE table. I "think"??? it was made in Ireland, came to N.Y, then by TRAIN & WAGON TRAIN, to Kalifornia!!---For a slight fee, we'll "create" a "history" of your Model A.

I wish they wouldn't use 28/29 light bars on 30/31s, they raise the headlights too much and just don't look right.

My '31 Pickup had a 28/29 light bar on it when I bought it. You are absolutely correct when you say they "just don't look right". Not sure how much higher it raises the headlights (probably only a couple of inches anyway), but it really looks better with the correct light bar on it.

I would agree that the "old" paint job under a clear coat in the video is a wee bit over the top. I have always liked them original. Although I do appreciate the skill that goes into a fine restoration and a high quality paint job.
For shining up the original ones I think Johnson's Paste Wax is something that one might consider. With quite a bit of elbow grease it worked rather well for me.
The truck being pulled out of the barn with my dad supervising and a picture from last fall in my front yard. This young lady saw my truck and asked if she could have her graduation pictures taken with it. Of course I said yes.

That clear coated Tudor looks ridiculous. Ugh.

But Dave's truck is a whole different story. Wow, that looks great. And I'm glad that a young woman would want to have it in her graduation pictures. Maybe there is hope for the future.

Dave truck looks STUNNING!!! Well done!

I have a 29 Fordor with original paint, interior, etc. Used DriWash-N-Guard on the paint, and it looks similar to Dave's truck. Everyone always goes crazy over how it looks. But, you have to clean it often, otherwise it just looks crummy.

If the Tudor in the link above had original paint under all that thick clearcoat, that would be one thing. However, it is pretty obvious that the 'patina' is fake, then lathered clear on top. They even clear coated over the rust in the corners of the doors that is eating away the metal.
