As Andy’s diagram indicates the gauge lights are on a rheostat. If they worked previously it could be as simple as the light switch knob has been accidentally rotated to the extreme right.

Hope this helps,

Tom

The dash lights are controlled by the headlamp switch in the F-1 pickup. No separate dash light switch.

No they are in the headlight switch as Tom correctly points out. The gauges can be dimmed and or completely shut off if the knob is turned

This is true for the 48-50 models.

The power comes from the CB panel. There are two CBs, both go to the Light Control Switch. One is for the headlight circuit and the other is for the Instrument Lights amount other things. First I would check and see if the other lights on the Light Control SW work, or just check the power coming into the Light SW. This is a 50 and earlier diagram, but the later F1 is the same except for the addition of the dimmer on the Light Control Switch.

Circuit protection will usually auto reset unless it's wore out. A wire or terminal could be open or loose. The rheostat in the light switch can also be problematic but they will usually be intermittent until they die completely.

Bypass the rheostat to see if that is the problem

Voltage in, voltage out. If it is working there is voltage out, if it is open, nothing.

If you jump a circuit that is suspect of a short, a fuse should be incorporated into the jumper or it might burn you. I've seen wires burn before and they can go completely within 2 seconds.

If you have rear rail lights then the oroblem could be the wire from the the tail light terminal on the headlight switch to the terminal before the rehostat . If you have voltage going into the rehostat portion of the switch then check for voltage on the other side of the rehostat.
If no voltage as said above the rehostat is open/defective.

Hope this helps,

Tom
