Default Timing gear knock

Will a new timing gear that is too far oversized cause a knock? That is, a .005 over, for example, installed to a crank gear that doesn't need an oversized timing gear. I don't have this situation; it just came up in a bull session yesterday.

If you add in a little off center grinding of the crankshaft that bounces the cam up the cam bore against the springs, add in a little xtra cam bearing clearance and you have the makings of a pretty good knock
