Default 12 volt starter install

I installed a new 12 volt starter on 40 ford coupe yesterday everything went well started up first turn. Started making a internal tapping noise. Let run for a while no change. Put in reverse to back out of garage would hardly move shut down immediately any thoughts on this.
Thanks

Had a similar experience long ago. My 52 F1 is 12 volts and after a long time I could not get the engine to even turn over. Suspected a starter issue and pulled it to check. I found that the ring gear had slipped from it's home on the flywheel in one spot and was wedging against the housing.
A quick fix (which I ended up doing at least twice) was to remove the starter and the lower flywheel plate and using a long punch tap the ring gear back into place. You have to turn the engine over by hand to make sure it in the proper position.
I tried cleaning the ring gear/flywheel contact area with acetone and putting Loctite in the groove (didn't help).
A few months later it was time for a clutch replacement so while I had it opened up I also installed a new ring gear, pressure plate, T/O beating, pilot bearing, T/O hub.
You should be able to see if this is the problem after pulling the starter. You may be able to slide your finger along the flywheel edge and feel that the ring gear is no longer flush.
12 vt starter has more torque than the 6vt and may have caused a weak ring gear to slip. Some folks "pin" those ring gears in place. Chap

Had a ring gear get cockeyed on an 8BA block, made a tapping noise, put main bearings in, didn't make a differance, noticed as I was putting it back together a groove worn in the block on one side. Being a broke teenager, I took the car to a farm equipment place around the corner and they tacked the gear back on. Drove the car for another couple of years without any problems.
