The exhaust manifolds, and distributors, are different, between 265 and 283.

Now, do you actually have a way to visually differentiate between a '56 265 block and a '57 283 block? What is difference between '57 283 block & '58 283 block? Fun stuff, huh? DD
.
The 58 block was the first year for side motor mounts.

Did not the early engines (265's) have side mounts built into the bell housing? I helped my brother put a 283 in his '55 pickup and that's the way the rear of the motor was mounted. No rear trans mount either. The transmission was just cantilevered off of the motor/bell housing arrangement.

Correct...side mounts on bellhousing for REAR support. BELOW, 1955 265 with NO side mount holes cast in block, & NO oil filter. Coop

A few years ago I was bidding on a local auction with tons of ford stuff, T thru about 1960. watching the bids end, I saw that the same bidder number got a lot of stuff. I mean really, a lot. No ford guys need parts? So, on pickup day I wanted to buy a couple items from the piles he bought so I figured out who he was. I made the deal, got a good price, found out he was just a scrapper, so I asked if I could visit his home to see the stash. Nothing goes home he said, we load here and drive straight to the scrap yard. I said you could make more money selling parts than scrap, his reply...gotta buy diapers, man
