Default directional lever not returning to neutral

Hi!
My 52 Vic turn lever is sticking and will not return to the neutral position. This happens on either a right or left turn. Ive lubricated the mechanism from the outside without taking anything apart. This made no difference. Do I have to go deeper and start removing parts to get to the source? How big a job would that be?

Your steering wheel has a cam on the bottom. The cam could be broken or maybe came off. You need to pull the steering wheel.

Disconnect the battery first. Then remove the horn button/ring. Push down in the center of the button/ring to compress the spring and twist to the left. It should move to the left and then you'll feel it pop up and loose. Loosen the steering shaft nut a few threads and then attach the steering wheel puller. I usually put a washer on top of the nut to make sure the puller does not go into the nut and damage threads. It usually does not take more than two or three turns of the puller to get the wheel to pop loose.

BE SURE to take photos of disassembly and what you find so you know how it all fits back together.

I'm not familiar with the '47 signal, but the aftermarket signal in my '38 doesn't have a self-canceling feature. A piezo buzzer connected between the power and load side of the flasher will remind you it is on. They are polarity sensitive, so it it doesn't work the first time, reverse the leads. They are loud, so you will need to put a cotton ball over it and wrap with tape to your desired level. They are cheap, here is one link but Google will produce many more sources.

Dunno, I didn't buy it new. I was only 9 years old. Mine could be aftermarket but it looks similar to the older units.

Is it strapped to the steering column? If so, it's an after market switch and is not self-cancelling.

The turn signal kit was a genuine Ford accessory option starting in 1947. Don't know if it was self cancelling. This particular one may be Ford or an aftermarket unit.

I installed a "buzzer" and don't know how I functioned without it. I don't even have indicator lights inside, so the buzzer is a must.
Cheap, easy to install and I don't have to try and interpret the strange hand signs that people were directing my way. A wrong response from me could possibly trigger a negative reaction... Chap

Our 46 has an Allstate aftermarket turn signal. If you look closely you will see a rubber wheel that rubs on the back of the steering wheel for self cancelling. It is strapped to the steering column. John
