Default Brass Black on shiny bolts

I like to use the old original bolts when possible but sometimes you just have to use those shiny new nuts and bolts. But they don't really fit in.

So I like to blacken them.I think it makes them look more like they belong....

I used them on the new head nuts and the water pump fake studs...

This stuff works on brass of course and most cad plated bolts. Won't work on chrome...

the nuts are supposed to be cad or zinc...i would have left them

heat may affect the product possibly

1955CJ5,
How durable is the black finish? It would be nice to know if the items would rust after treating them in the Brass Black liquid. I am thinking about blackening unplated, i.e. beadblasted fasteners. I have used manganese parkerizing liquid, but the black finish tends to rusts after a while.

To emulate the Raven finish, I clean and wire brush the fasteners, then heat them up with a torch until reasonably hot and dip them in used motor oil. Turns them a satin black.

Works well. Don't know the chemistry.. Nor why the "used" oil.

I like them to look like they belong on an old car...not a hardware store shelf...

I have not seen any rust issues....but we are in a pretty dry climate here.....

It doesn't last and will rust immediately. You could coat them with satin clear paint. Professional phosphate is more durable

Larry Jenkins,
Are you concerned that heating fasteners in that it might change the steels properties, like making them brittle, or other undesirable characteristics?

After I blacken metal with gun blueing I quickly dry the parts and rub them with a rag soaked with ATF. Once a year or so I also use the ATF soaked rag to wipe down unpainted metal parts.

Almost any nut or bolt can be had at a fastener store in "PLAIN" finish. It is black oxide finish.

Rusty..

No. You don't heat the fasteners anywhere near the point where it changes chemistry.

Hardware store regular stuff is probably Grade 2 fasteners. ACE hardware stores do carry Grade 2; 5 and 8.

Most of then original Model A fasteners are harder than Grade 2. Probably equal to the modern Grade 5.

I try to keep and restore all my original Model A fasteners.. As most of you do.

HARDWARE STORES ARE NOT "FASTENER" STORES!!!!!

They are junk stores that handle Chinese shit.
A fastener store is one that handles ONLY nuts and bolts, like Tacoma Screw products or Cascade Screw Products.
Their stuff is made in the USA.

From the company's FAQ page>>>

Q: What metals can Brass Black be used on?
A: Brass Black is used on yellow metals (brass, copper and bronze) ONLY.

I tried gun blueing and the hot oil dip method. I think the oil dip method works better. It doesn't rub off and if you burn off the first dip and heat and dip it again it gets real nice and dark. Water sheds right off too.

How hot do you get the bolts for the oil dip method?

For goodness sake those spark plugs are old and there just to fill the holes while painting etc....along with the rag in the distributor hole.....

It would be a good trick to paint the plugs but not the head nuts next to them....

HaHa
I was wondering about that cotton timing apparatus
I think your ideas a pretty good one. I wonder how it will last?
I do agree with you though, new bolts look like a dime on a goats ass in a "used" motor situation.
