Question Head Still On, ... Cleaning Carbon

Hey All,

It turns out my head gasket is fine so no need to pull the head, ... Whew!

However, I wanted to clear out any carbon off the head and the top of the pistons if I removed the head for the gasket. In the past with modern engines, I have always slowly poured water DOWN a running engines carburetor to blow off carbon through steam pressure.

Question here is, How does one pour down an updraft carburetor?

Possibly though the vacuum port on the intake, but even slower?

Regards
Bill

It could be put thru the vacuum port, or, use a spray bottle thru the carb throat.

Why? What kind of problem are you having with carbon? Are there chunks of it causing detonation or something? The A has a low compression engine, there is always going to be a little black in it.With modern gas and oils carbon hasn't been a problem for many years.

Hi Patrick,

I'm not sure spray bottle could deliver enough and it would already be well on its way to being atomized, but I guess I could give it a try.

Keith,

I looked inside the cylinders with a borescope and did see some carbon buildup, not a lot so if I can knock it out now all the better. I have no previous history of the car except from the Widow of the owner which passed 10 years ago.

Regards
Bill

Could run the engine directly off sea-foam use an old gas line screwed into the carb and a funnel and run it.

Thanks Bill for reminding me.

I do have some seafoam here and I use it in the gas tanks of my modern cars. My Carb and Manifolds are brand new, so I think I'll just go through the vacuum on the intake manifold.

I might need to speed up a bit, age is on my heel's and is trying to catch up to me.

Regards
Bill

Since the advent of unleaded fuel, there is no carbon depositing from lead. So that leaves 2 causes: 1. Excessively rich fuel mixture-Fix the carb! 2. Worn/damaged pistons and/or rings. Again-Fix it!

I owned and drove the car for about 3 week's, tore it down and did a complete body off chassis rebuild. I just put it all back together and drove it about 10 miles total and just wanted to clear out the existing carbon.

I think you’re always going to have a little carbon on the tops of the pistons. Find the sweet spot of your gav and don’t run rich.. (I wouldn’t run it lean either)

Use Seafoam as recommended above. With the engine running, and a small flexible tube in the vacuum port on the intake manifold, just put the tube into the bottle of Seafoam and it will be sucked up into the engine... probably stalling the engine.. but ok. Let it sit for awhile, 15 minutes or so and then re-start the engine.... it may smoke quite a bit but ok.
