Default Aires muffler not fitting correctly

I am using an Aries Muffler with the correct rear clamp on top of the frame with the bolt going thru the frame from the top. The muffler is sitting quite high and the rear exhaust will definitely hit the rear end axle housing. I thought it would be below the Axle housing? Can anyone help me on this one? Thanks in advance, Ken

If your parts are the correct dimensions I wouldn't worry. Give us a photo.

I am sorry I am using the hole in the bottom of the frame. I said that wrong. but I meant it is on the top of the bottom rail of the frame The exhaust hitting the rear axle housing will blacken the paint or worse.....

If new return to sender it could have been damaged in shipping. If used maybe you could stick a long pipe or such in the outlet and tweak it a little?

All new and no visible damage but the muffler is sitting high so the rear pipe is pointing at the axle housing really strange I am going to call Aries tomorrow and see with the drop measurement is on the muffler

What kind of vehicle, and does it have the correct rear spring?

I have an Aries stainless and it comes out below the axle.

The March 1929 Service Bulletins page 327 shows the new muffler clamp. It also says when replacing the old style clamp with the new clamp, you are to move the mounting hole rearward 1 11/32". I'm wondering if this is just to retain more frame strength by having the holes further apart?

Since you want to clamp the top of the curve, you can't move the hole far in either direction.

If the body isn't on the frame then the exhaust would raise up and probably hit the axle. The same goes if the spring is too thick.

I just took this picture of my 28 exhaust, and I'm glad I did. I just noticed the light color next to the rim, and if that's tire cords, it's time for new tires.

Ken
There are 2 rear tail pipe clamps listed for sale depending on the year of the car. http://www.amuffler.com/content/otherproducts.htm

I also found that the connection to the exhaust manifold can really cause mis-alignment. At first the brake shaft was rubbing against the muffler - but an adjustment at the manifold made a big difference.

I assume you don't have a second Aires muffler in-house to compare. Is there anyone nearby who has one to compare(especially as big as the Illinois Region is)? You're welcome to stop by (Ha) again to compare to mine, both on and off an A!

It is a 1931 Chassis that I have just built..and I believe the rear spring to be correct. it is the correct rear clamp altho reproduction and in order for the height to be correct (below the axle) I would have to turn the clamp up side down which of course would not be correct

Thanks but the drawing does not give the height from the top of the rear curve to the bottom outlet.

I have also found that some of the Pipes have a different radius at the front where they connect to the exhaust maniford, even thought it may be slight, by the time it transfers to the end of the pipe it can make a difference of inches!

Gary: The second picture you show (post #14) is for installation of the extended pipe for the Station Wagon. I've looked at that before and still can't quite get the idea of how that works.

Maybe when you get the body on the weight will put the pipe below the axle.

On the station wagon the exhaust pipe needs to be farther back due to fumes that's for an extension i believe.

Update the rear bracket is not at the peak of the radius and is forward of the peak so that it is raising the muffler higher. I have in touch with aries working to a conclusion I will keep you posted
