12 volt coil on 6 volts
I purchased another "A" sometime back and just noticed that it has a coil that says Motorcraft on it that looks like one on a modern day 12 volt car. The car runs like a top and have drove it on several tours racking up 3500 miles so for with out any trouble. Should I change this out or if it's not broke don't fix it?

I also run a 12 volt coil (no internal resister ) in my 30 coupe , starts and runs like a top.

Re: 12 volt coil on 6 volts
All coils start out as 6 volt coils. The manufacturer adds an internal resistor on some to drop the voltage from 12 to 6 volts. Others need an external resistor to drop the voltage from 12 to 6 volts.
Your must be the one that would have needed an external resistor if it was used in a 12 volt vehicle.

You could measure the voltage at your points, shouldn't be over 8v. Most Fords do not use a resistor coil. They tend to use an external resistor or resistor wire. Or measure the resistance in the coil, should be about 1.5 ohms. A 3 ohm coil has a resistor. |

Re: 12 volt coil on 6 volts
I use a 6 volt battery and a 12 volt coil no issues. 6 volt coils are twice the money and more in my part of the world. I believe that coils do not know the difference ?

Thanks Guy for the info. I'll probably just leave it alone till it quits or keeps on running.

Re: 12 volt coil on 6 volts
One has to verify the primary resistance of the coil, a 6 volt coil should have approximately 1.5 to 2 ohms resistance.
