the reason I suggested a hair dryer is a heat gun if not careful will melt the carpet.heat gun is useful but I would be leery of using on carpet.hopefully pulling engine without removing carpet works out.

do you have a late 51 with four bolt holding the trans or do you have the earley with the the eight bolts

I would think the most efficient way to "drop" a transmission is with a lift or jacks. Easier then pulling it through the interior.

On My 50 mercury I was able to remove trans and clutch without removing floor mats or pan. Dave
